Locking Wheel Nuts and Potential Wheel Theft

This evening some runt tried but failed to pinch the 20" Sport Wheels off my better half's X5. Luckily they were disturbed and only minor damage was done, i.e. nicked bolts from 2 wheels.
The chap from the recovery service who helped me sort the car out temporarily ie re-inflate and take car off bricks, mentioned something about a "Special" type of wheel nut that requires the V5 to be used? Apparently very secure etc. Anyone heard of these?
My view is that if the runt(s) are willing, no locking wheel nut, special or otherwise will deter.
Anybody else heard of these or had a similar experience?
