That sucks, particularly when you've gone to so much effort to make the bike "yours"...

I have a 2017 AT DCT, I haven't tried the same model as yours but I spent a couple of days on a 2021 (newer model from yours), it is quite a marked improvement IMHO. The gearbox is even better and the 1100cc engine feels better on the road. I'm half-tempted to upgrade but I'm waiting to see if the rumors of a supercharger for the 2024 model come true (just because) smile

Yep I spent a lot of time, money and effort making it mine, which is why it’s doubly heartbreaking.

I know it will be a battle re getting what it’s worth, but let’s see.

At least this bike is fully insured and has a good level of cover as I had a fully comprehensive policy which also covers me for my riding gear including Helmet and boots up to the value of £1500.

The sadest news is my other fun bike my Montesa, which is also a write off, but sadly was not insured at all as it’s a non road legal bike.

As it's not covered on insurance, how much is wrong with it? Looks like it's melted a few plastics and tyres but does it start?

Would the Montesa be covered on a home insurance policy?

And that’s the rub of the problem.

Unfortunately we have separate buildings and contents insurance ( don’t ask!) which is making life doubly difficult.

We have a dispute with the contents cover insurance company as they say that they classify our garage as an outbuilding, even though it is actually built into the house and has a door from the utility to access the garage.

We are certain that it makes our garage not an outbuilding as it’s integrated in the house.

However the insurance company insist that it’s an outbuilding and that the max amount covered on the contents insurance is therefore only £5000.

We have rejected their offer and it is now held as a disputed claim.

They are saying it’s going to take up to 30 days to resolve the dispute.

So we are stuck in a very awkward position right now.

Yep it is mostly cosmetic, but it would not start at all.

I’ve spent some time on it and found the root cause of the non starting issue.

It was the magnetic cut off switch, the wires had melted to the frame.

I’ve removed that now and it’s running again.

The throttle cable was also melted and seized, so a new one of those has been ordered, along with a new mudguard and rear mount and hardware as well as a new tyre.

To be honest tinkering with it had taken my mind off the stress and hassle of all the crap with the damage and smoke issues around the house.

The parts I mentioned for the Montesa have all been delivered today.

That will give me something to do at the weekend whilst mainly avoiding sorting things out in the garage!

It needed to be done, can’t waste what is a great fun bike for trials and off road fun just because it’s not insured.

Noticed the first issue tonight as the new inner mudguard has no alloy ring inserts like the old one has, thought they were press fit types but looks like they are heated plastic inserts.

Will have to work out how to get around that.

An update on this thread as it needs to get back on track re the original post of My Africa Twin.

Well at the end of March we finally got the contents insurance sorted, so armed with some extra funds I took the plunge.

I am now the proud owner of this 2023 ATAS 1100 DCT ES.

The decision was pretty easy really, I loved my previous ATAS so much it was a no brainer to replace it with the newer model.

So here she is.

Love the look of it from the front.

It also has the fancy ES suspension, I could not work out how to turn it from hard to medium on the ride home from the dealership, but I can conform that hard is very firm indeed.

I’ve now setup one of the users modes for my preferred settings and have it on medium.

Congrats! I love mine. I normally chop and change bikes quite a bit but I've now had my 2021 ATAS ES for nearly three years and I'm pretty sure I'll be keeping it forever smile

An excellent choice sir!

Great to hear that you still love it after 3 years too!

And snap on the Shoei ADV helmet too!
