I learnt filtering by following people who looked like they both knew what they were doing and had more than 2 brain cells. Don't follow the people who filter at 50mph and wiggle within an inch of cars. One day you might do that but it's not the way to learn!
Also look for wheels turning, faces in mirrors (or lack of) and also notice that if a nice selection of people move out the way (they often do on my commute, BIG THUMBS UP FROM ME!), the guy who doesn't move is either:
a) Not looking at anything - don't speed past him/her, CRAWL past them
b) A total who wants to make your life HELL and might actually move out into you just because they think it's clever.
I had (b) last week and they literally tried to barge me into a fenced central reservation.
