BMW S1000RR Recall
Discussion
As i've repeatedly said here, quite a few bikes here have gone bang in SA in a big way. The really worrying this is the way BMW have tried to dodge the bullet and void the warranties at any and every opportunity.
way back when, the first E46 M3's were lunching their engines due to a similar issue. Finally BM rebuilt the motors but the values of those cars was seriously affected as people worried about rogue cars slipping through the net.
Simple physics tells us the pistons speeds and loads on an engine that revs to 15k being pretty stratospheric, and whilst problems will always occur, BMW's handling of this is in my opinion, nothing short of disgusting.
To void a warranty because the bike took part in a track day, NOT competative racing, is outrageous, especially given the very nature and purpose of the bike, and BMW's constant trumpeting of such.
And to not do a straight swap with a new motor, checked and proven to be Ok is pretty rough treatment of their customers.

Tbh, by the time you've stripped a new motor to check it you've done the same amount of work as fixing the original engine.bass gt3 said:

Two dyno shops near me have experienced this within the last month. 3 motors in total, 2 factory built and one a UK rebuild of one of the popped motors.
Thinking about it might be one and the same. Shop #2 was asked to run in a new racebike which is most boring / lengthy, get me coffee / earphones / jerry can and were puzzled to discover shop #1 had already mapped the bike. A few phone calls ensued revealing that the new engine was in fact a Bracknell rebuild.
I'm guessing someone (BMW UK or customer) had lost faith in shop #1. Shop #2 blows up the rebuilt motor. Not sure what actually went bang, problem is back with BMW, probably HQ rather than dealer.
To a crisp!
That's 2 weeks after his number 1 bike imploded at brands hatch, again with stock motor!

It doesn't seem to be limited to 2012 bikes..as mentioned earlier. there is a guy in the S1000RRUKFORUM with a red and white one that was built in September 2011 according to his post BMW UK have confirmed that his is effected
Doesn't 2012 model year start about aug 2011?bass gt3 said:

The issue a torque issue with one component. There are 2 possible wear points and Im sure that both will be thoroughly checked before the bolt is tightened with a torque wrench and then reassembled, with a full warrante being given on the work done.
Any problems after that are covered by BMW still, and tbh I would much rather have a human check my bike and tell me that its okay than just a robot who builds things.

Doesn't 2012 model year start about aug 2011?I've said before the Japs could easily have put out an engine with the same output but they are more cautious, BMW needed a headline grabber and pushed the engine a little too close to it's limits, most road riders wont ride it anywhere hard enough but trackdays seem a different matter.

They might have one now then.I've got a BMW S1000RR. Clearly I'm a bit of a novelty as mine hasn't blown up yet (it's had its moments, but no worse than any car).
I've claimed on the warranty and had no issue too.
I've also asked about the trackday bit and once again a nice bit of chinese whispers here. BMW won't decline a warranty claim if a bike that's primarily used on the road has been used on track. They will decline a bike that's a racebike, but then wouldn't all manufacturers? (That's a genuine question btw).I can't see many car manufacturers honouring warranty on a race car though.
One last bit is that nearly every car and bike I've owned has had a recall for something or other in its lifetime, some major, some minor. The ones that were highly stressed sporty ones, tended to have more recalls, but I see that as a bit of a no brainer.
For those worried about recalls, then avoid buying:
Last bit, is that I have a range of tinfoil hats bioth used and unused in most sizes available for just £5 each.

For those worried about recalls, then avoid buying:
- A ZX10R as that had a recall and a delay in delivery too.
- An Aprilia RSV4 as that had a conrod recall
- A Fireblade a recall for clutch issues
- An R1 quite a few recalls for TPS amongst other
- Any Ducati ever made according to this list http://www.lemonlawspecialists.com/recall/?make=DU...
- A GSXR, as all frames snap in half and kill the rider to death instantly
