Bikes are slow...

If Porsche made a motorbike you'd be dry humping it right now.
Ferrari did: http://pistonheads.com/sales/1135167.htmBike v car, yawn.
A bike is a relatively cheap (look at used bikes), often practical, vehicle that is enjoyable to use, can accelerate quickly, is good through traffic, takes up little space in the garage and gets held up less by Harold in his Rover 400 than even a supercar due to its narrow width.
So what if, on a race track, an expensive, finely-prepared car will lap more quickly? I don't care.

I suppose round a tight twisty circuit, then yes, something like a radical would be marginally quicker on account of superior handling, but fk me, some of these modern superbikes accelerate like a saturn 5 rocket, and that is what would give the bike a lead it wouldnt relinquish around somewhere with longish straights, say snetterton or cadwell.
I was purely going on lap times that I've seen around uk circuits. Anything with similar purpose to a superbike ( Atom, Carerham etc) will be quicker (evo did an R500 bs R1 and the Caterham was about 2 seconds quicker). You're right, the acceleration of a superbike can give it an advantage, but only really at a special 'bike' layout like Mallory or Silverstone (as also shown by Evo). As pointed out above, even at Snetterton, with it's huge straight, a Radical will be significantly quicker than a road bike, because even a WSB can't keep up.Edited by snowy slopes on Thursday 13th May 10:27
I'm not knocking bikes at all, I love bikes, I'm just looking at the lap times.
Jackal was winding us up a bit though ;-)

...Bikes are also very cheap. For the price of a GT3RS you could buy 15 of the best ones that have ever been made.
EH?The MV Augusta F4CC is $120,000

There is a video of an Atom 300 driven by Clarkson against a CBR600R? ridden by a top rider round the topgear track. The Atom was over 4 secs quicker....
True they did, but an ariel atom with 300brake against a cbr600r isnt really a fair comparison is it? Now if they had pitted the atom against say a blade/r1/gsxr1000 then it might not have been so one sided. As for a top rider, was it ever made public who rode the bike? Lets see him try that against say jonny rea on a blade and see how he gets on. Thats the trouble with top gear(great though it is), you dont always get the real picture. Yes the atom will handle corners better, mainly as it has 4 wheels, but down the straights a top rider on a blade would have been all over clarkson. smack said:

What a road! The rider isn't too shabby either....jackal said:
<said bks>... And when you get onto the country lanes, bikes should indicate left and keep left because on the brakes and round the corners a car will sooner or later come past at Mach 9
If you overtake people in corners is that not dangerous driving as well as being irresponsible and possibly suicidal?Cars and bikes have different strengths and weaknesses, but in terms of outright speed, a top end road/track car is noticeably quicker than even BSB qualifying, that is before you get into formula type cars which will knock another 10 seconds+ off these times.
Cadwell park 2009 Qualifying BSB 1.27.39
The only Radical SR8 time i could find at the same track 1.22.5
By way of a more direct comparison
Jedi (R1 engined) 1.22.225
R1 lap record 1.37.9
That's not even close, and before you start, you can buy a good jedi for £7k

What a fantastic stretch of tarmac! Bloody impressive riding as well, the camera guy surely can't have any pegs left after that! What a pointless discussion.
A purpose-built racing car can be a lot quicker than a bike on some tracks.
A bike is more difficult and requires more commitment to ride fast.
For various reasons, almost any bike is more fun than almost any car and that is before you you throw in cost.

Car beats bike on car show with a host that absolutely hates bikes... shocker. Bike vs Car bullst is always funny.
Lets talk real world here... you both both blast along a nice country road, keeping up with each other having a hoon.
THEN...OH NO... there a caravan with 4 cars stuck behind it!!!!
Bike nips by in seconds and enjoys the clear road ahead thanks to the caravan... car sits in the traffic doing 40mph getting frustrated.

I hear what you are saying, but it does grate when you get the evangelical bikers that think that bikes are the fastest things ever in the world. A purpose-built racing car can be a lot quicker than a bike on some tracks.

when you get single minded with cars, they are quicker than bikes, that is all i was trying to say.
The road is not the place to be going quickly with any vehicle, the track is...... And on a track, for the top 20% of cars and bikes, like for like, cars are significantly quicker

On track, they say that the time is lost on the long corners and this is where things like Radicals with their aero and slicks really waste sportsbikes. I'd still rather be on the sportsbike though.
