The negative side of biking.
Discussion
At 6:30 on Thursday morning, I got the call that everyone dreads. My sister's husband, who I introduced to biking, had a severe accident commuting to the station.
As the morning unfolded, it went from being bad to worse to nightmare news. Due to his head and then stomach impacting with a lamp post, that lights a largely pointless keep left island, his injuries list just got longer and more serious. He is currently being operated on for a 2nd 3 hour operation and is still in an induced coma. On top of the multitude of broken bones and lacerations, he's so far got:
Brain bleed.
Ruptured spleen that's been removed.
Torn liver
Damaged one side of his heart
Perforated bowel
Internal bleeding they are struggling to control
Even if he gets through the internal damage, the head injury severity is still not confirmed and he will need further ops to pin/plate broken bones. 2.5 days on, it's still touch and go in ICU and he is not stable enough for them to be happy.
I'm godfather to both his kids (my nieces) who are 1 and 3 and are shortly arriving at my house to relieve my mum for a day or so.
A full police investigation and a radio appeal are happening due to a witness arriving just after it happened describing a white van that was already stopped and helping, but left the scene. It was a straight road in drizzle at 5:45am.
This is the second time I've gone through this, losing my best mate in 2001 and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
I guess this post is just to try to direct the random thoughts and lack of sleep, addled brain I have at the moment. I know a lot of people won't want to read this - I feel the same when I stick my head in the sand over some of the bad bike things I've seen and had happen to me - but I can't avoid facing this one. Sitting in an ICU looking at someone close to you who is completely and utterly f
ked, is one of the worst feelings ever.
I probably won't be on here for a few more days, but I hope to update with good news at some point.
Please, please be careful out there.

Hope things turn out okay, fingers crossed.

Not intending to jump the gun but, *if* there was some complicity from the van driver you have to ask what sort of human being could leave the scene. Just awful.I can only echo other peoples thougts really, and wish your family well.
It'll be hard not to feel blame yourself, I remember the grief my uncle got when I had my first off, many years ago.
We all know just how easily we can be hurt, and how it only happens to others etc.
Lets hope you get the right kind of news soon.
Best wishes from me.
