I'm looking at getting back onto an older Fireblade with a rather tyre choice limiting 16 inch frontie. I've seen a bike, very keen, and just pricing up the extras that i'd want including new boots.

I've had a 97 model before and used it quite happily with Bridgestone BT014's, they were fine once warm but struggled to get much over 2k from a rear, not that mileage is a particular issue as 2k is a very good year for me!

Looking now, even though 014's/016's are available in the 130/70/16 front a lot don't stock them and no one seems to do a pair deal on them.

Right, so options are quite limited but i've seen good pair deals on Metzeler Sportec M3's in the right size. I've read a mixture of reviews, many more good than bad, but it's not a brand i've used before so in the scheme of 10 years riding where (if i'm being totally honest) Bridgestones have suited me best, i'm a little apprehensive about going for a totally new to me brand.

Anyone have experience of Metzeler they care to share??

Thank you,
Rob smile

Why the grumpy face then!!? lol hehe

You actually ridden the M3's? Would it be a good fast road tyre?

They're the only tyres I've ever had so no basis for comparison I'm afraid. They're cheap and do everything I want though, never had a problem I'd attributed to tyres and wear well.

I just got a pair of Racetec K2s and they are ace. Doesn't look they will last very long but that's to be expected.

Got some K3s at the moment. Feel really stable, transition smoothly from edge to edge without any sudden drop in (like Michelins), and feel very sticky. Not the lightest I don't think.

Good performing tyre.

Don't look bad either.

I have a set of racetec currently, good tyres but mine hasn't lasted long, 4000 miles!

Mine came with factory Michelin tyres, when worn I changed to Metzler only because the rear could go from 240 to 260 and Metzler were the only 260 choice.
I found them a fantastic improvement, better for grip and high speed stability, have now fitted about 3 sets of Metzlers and doubt I fit anything else.
They must take tyres seriously, as when I took the wheel in on its own the bike shop called me to confirm it was a V Rod as Metzler now make tyres specifically for this bike. Sure enough, they have 'V-Rod' stamped on the side. Not sure how many others design tyres for a specific bike.

Can you fit a 17x3.5" front wheel from a NC30 to the blade, to give a wider tyre choice?

Dunno, but I do know 16" hornet owners fit the 17" from the Blackbird

I've put s20 front and back. Best road tyre I've had! Warms up quickly and really good corner feel. Makes the bike feel first lap track warm most of the time.

No idea if they do a 16" front though!

No quite as easy as that. Bought a Blackbird front wheel a 16" front wheeled Hornet and my discs didn't fit the spigot hole so be careful, Honda do like subtle differences on stuff.

I used to use M3's as my fast road / track day tyre back when they were a current tyre. My profile piccie is on M3's in the damp at Albacete. In short awesome tyres in my opinion.

However, bought a new set last year for a foreign road trip and they weren't the same compound. I was expecting them to be new old stock but the date code suggested they had been manufactured recently. I think Pirelli Metzeler are using old style moulds to knock out cheaper tyres to "fill in" the cheaper end of the market. That said, for normal use the harder compound might be a better bet. I used to go through three back tyres to every front.
