I've had my Caberg for about 8 years, which is probably too long but asides from the inner padding being a bit discoloured (inner foam is still white) it's still as comfy to wear the day I got it.

Anyway, should I just got to my local store and try a bunch on to see what's best, or you take a punt at ordering a helmet online, something like the below;

http://www.formotorbikes.com/nexx-xr1r-carbon-whit...

Obviously I can return it if I don't like it (and don't take labels off/go out for a ride etc.) being distance selling etc.

Budget is around £200 up to £300 if it's really good. The Caberg (V2R) is the only helmet I've ever had so no idea how it compares to other brands!

Just order one online it will be fine. Or if it isn't, just keep ordering and sending back until you find one you like. Should only take about 6 weeks and 12 trips to the post office.

Or try one on in a shop, take up the guy's time and then scarper and then order online. They love that. It's like charity work.

Or, go into a shop, get some good advice, try a variety of brands and sizes and walk out happy with a place to go back to and a person to talk to if you have a problem.

As above you can waste a load of time buying one helmet at a time and keep sending them back until you get the right one or just go to a shop and try them.

I'd avoid the helmet you linked to though. It's an old model and not even reduced. Nexx's are good helmets but the sizing is small and the shape is odd. We tend to find people either love them or hate them.

Sure, just noticed there's a few other newer/cheaper models on there.

TBH I'm in no real hurry to get a new helmet hence the online ordering option, that said given I haven't tried any other helmet for ages I guess it would be better to just go into a shop and try a bunch of different helmets on for size.

I will only buy from a shop, I try loads of helmets on from a number of shops so i can try lots of brands and models, and you'll feel a numpty but really try and wear one for as long as possible around the shop once you've found one you like and fits really well, don't be scared to ask for help as well.

It makes a world of difference in my opinion having one that fits well and is comfortable, over one that rubs or doesn't quite sit quite as it should.

You can then always go and buy online but most shops in my experience can get close to price matching if you ask, I don't mind paying a little over internet prices as they do provide a service the internet can not.

You could try on in the shop then buy online.

If you feel guilty you could buy a token purchase to ease your conscience.

Not that I've done that.

Just so you know, Distance Selling Regulations was replaced in 2014. You need to look at the Consumer Contracts Regulations to understand the current position, which is a little less favourable to the consumer, but still allows you to return stuff.

Another thing - I'd understand minor sizing differences between different helmet manufacturers, but is there much variation between the same make, model & size of helmet (e.g. one 'medium' may be too tight, but another may be just right) or are (as I'd rather hope) they made to a higher consistency?

Unless you're buying the same helmet again, I can't imagine buying one online. Apart from minor worries about the RM heaving it about in the van ect,how on earth do youknow you got the comfy/best fitting one?

Last time I bought a helmet, I left the shop with a completely different one to the one I'd planned to buy. Simply based on fit,and finding out the features I'd thought I wanted were actually not nice to use practically, when I tried them in the shop.

If we all keep typing to save a quid or two by buying online, especially after abusing shops who invest in the bricks and mortar to allow us to tyry things, then sooner, there won't be any off line shops.

There is a value in the service a decent shop can provide.

When I bought my most recent helmet, the first time I tried it (first one I tried in the shop) it felt too small.
2 hours later, after trying loads on, I came back to it and tried it again. It felt perfect the second time around.
What felt too tight to start, felt secure and comfy the second time, after trying a dozen others on.
It fits perfect.

Just go to a shop and pay the money. Try loads on, take your time, and take your time with each helmet on, give each one 10 minutes to see how it feels.

The for the same make, model and size the helmet will be exactly the same. The only difference we tend to see is when a helmet has been tried on a lot and gives because of it but even then it's only a minor difference.

As to those worrying about couriers throwing helmets around when you order online, how do you think the helmet got to the shop or warehouse in the first place?

Don't worry I'll be dropping in to a few shops sometime.

I was just wondering if I'd be winding up the shop assistant by trying a few helmets of the same make/model/size if one was close but not perfect ... hehe

Helmet may not suit the forward lean of the bike.

I used a hjc is-17 until I got a 675r.
The sight line at the top of the visor was too low so when I was leant over the bike I was trying to look under the brow of the helmet.

Good to try it on the bike first.
