Riding in jeans - cool or stupid?
Discussion
Do you lot often ride around i jeans? I mean just for short journeys, about 10-20 minutes, is it worth taking the risks...
I have been out in just jeans and a t-shirt twice, and I have to say I feel a bit more vulnerable (and colder), but are there any of you who would never ride in jeans and always wear leathers/armoured jacket and trousers.

Jeans very cool at the mo....
Seriously, I used to take my chances with jeans on short rides until my friend Dave came off his bike whilst going less than 0.5 mile to the pub one evening.
Losing his leg just above the knee was bad enough but I thought that it was a tad unnecessary of his orthopeadic surgeon to point out to him that, had he had his leather jeans on, he would have had some nasty bruising.....
Be careful out there

Wanna see what happens when your femur hits a car at just 30MPH?
Oh yes, the overhead of biking - I still can't watch that "Driver that looked but didn't see" ad without feeling physically a bit queasy; it brings back such happy memories of hitting that Transit at 45mph....
I always wear leathers/Cordura out on the road. The only time I don't would be eg getting on and off rally sites, where you're doing about 2mph on grass, and it's blazing hot, and even then I still wear boots and gloves.
You've got to assess your own risk though, depending on experience, type of roads, road and traffic conditions etc etc. Despite my own practices, I would support the right of the individual rider to wear WHATEVER THEY D*MN WELL PLEASE. (reserving the right also to tut under my breath and shake my head slowly when overtaken on a blind bend at 80mph by some nugget wearing T-shirt, shorts and flip-flops
)

No, but jeans are normally comfier, take less time to get on etc. I would never wear just jeans for a longer journey (e.g. over 25 minutes, which isn't actually that far at 30mph
). But then again, if you're unlucky enough to have an accident, its going to be the time you're not wearing the right stuff... >> Edited by m1spw on Wednesday 25th January 20:58

Agree in my heart but my head thinks of needless burden on the health service; a tricky one....

Put it another way, idiots are less likely to require months of costly treatment, just one moderate costing funeral.
I know that the above is a bit harsh, it's aimed only at that tiny minority who are reckless idiots

amen
I'd dispute the fact that accidents are 'inevitable' (watch me crash tomorrow now) but at the end of the day, it's my own risk what i wear, I always wear boots, full-face lid, gloves, back protector, usually armoured jacket, sometimes leathers
if i wanted to be really safe, i'd be in a volvo (wearing armour and a lid)
however, i was once overtaking a guy on a big old bmw traily on the autobahn at about 100-120 kmh, nylon football-type shorts and a vest
he proceeded to take his hands of the bars and lift his helmet off
just then, we both passed a big lump of wood, a broken pallet or something in the middle of the road
I bet he sh@t himself, i almost did
now that's daft

Fair build....
I struggle with the "I'll wear jeans, its only a short journey" logic (although I have done it myself) the road surface is no softer because its just round the corner & the Transit van doesn't know that you're only popping to the shops......
I think you can get kevlar reinforced jeans, i think Hood make them. I have never used them but was thinking of getting some for the summer.
The adverts show the designer being pulled on his bum behind a truck, cheeks scraping on the tarmac.
Maybe someone on here has a pair or better still has crashed in a pair and lived to tell the tail.

That's NOT a 30 MPH impact, trust me
there's a million variables tho, someone who rides with one leg out in front of his bike slamming into an armoured car, or me with my foot tucked nearly up my bum on a vfr400, sliding forward and kneeing the door of a micra
but yes, wearing leather will usually result in a lesser injury than wearing jeans and being in the exact same accident, but people wearing leather are not indestructable. always better to avoid an accident in the first place instead of being lulled into a false sense of security

I lost 4" out of my femur, but they only found 2" Had I been wearing my bodybag they would have found it all and put it back.
