Under took a car the other day after he let me through. We were doing a fair rate of knots and as I went passed I went to wave and I nearly blew off the frickn bike! Next time I shall be using my leg...
Down here in London not many people nod, but out in the ope an a roads and small towns, a the nod seems to be the thing..

Loads of nods round here.
Noticed in Scotland that everyone waves rather than nods. I quite liked doing it - more of an obvious and friendly gesture.
Everyone nods if you always nod. A lot of people say "no one nods", but at the same time say "I never nod first because I'm embarrassed if they don't nod back". Needless to say, when you put 2 of these 'return nodders' together, you get no nod. I almost always initiate the nod.
P.S. I am not a loser who studies the art of nodding

Always try to nod but sometimes I'm concentrating too hard as I'm still learning (which is probably a bad thing because it means I'm not 100% aware of all vehicles around me)...
One thing I definitely do is acknowledge cars when they go out of their way to let me through, with a waggle of the leg. Before I got my bike I always moved over in traffic to give bikers more room to filter (basically make it safer for them), and most bikers spotted the obvious manoeuvre in their favour and thanked me in some way - some with a wave, some with a waggle of the left boot.
Being on the bike myself, I've found that 'thanking' a car driver who's got out of your way is a lot easier and safer the 'boot-waggle' way rather than taking a hand off the bars to wave - especially at speed.
The fun bit is deciding what sort of waggle to do, a bit like Monty Python ministry of funny walks...

I will Nod to all bikers just not the chav brigade on scooters... I do like to thank drivers for letting me through but I like to give a cheery wave but it can be difficult when filtering through very narrow traffic ...
The leg waggle could work but I do tend to push down firmly on the pegs / knees into tank when in slow moving traffic to balance the bike better and take my weight off the bars...
