Ringside Seat: back on two wheels

Dale's back on the 'ring and back on two wheels ... and it feels good!

It's 7am in the morning, the sun is shining and I'm buzzing. I can't remember the last time I've been so excited. Normal drill for the alarm going off at 6am involves me bashing the snooze button and praying for a small non-lethal natural disaster.

Worth the early start for a clear track
Worth the early start for a clear track
But not today.

Today is the second and final day of the Doc Scholl Motorcycle Training course and I'm not needed in the office until 10. It's an hour before the track opens. That will give me just over 90 minutes to sample the Nordschleife on two wheels with no cars. Just bikes.

It's a special opportunity. Really special. In over 10 years of lapping here, this will be my first time riding the 'ring on a bike without worrying about oil spills or optimistic lunging overtakes up the inside.

Not only that, but this will be the first time I've put my head down and gone quickly on a bike in five years.

The Doc does the briefing

Luckily, I've got just the motorcycle for the man whose aspirations may well exceed his abilities. The 2012 BMW S1000RR is a beast. The spec sheet shows 193hp, and a blat on the autobahn proved it did an easy 186mph, nudging an artificial top speed that is exactly 299kph. But it's loaded as standard with the kind of kit that would have cost me a couple of credit cards a few years ago; quick-shifter, traction-control with adjustable throttle maps and even ABS that works on a sports bike.

It's a world away from my last bike, a simple but brutal Suzuki GSX-R1000K7 that was kicking out around 170hp. No electronic aids on that bike, and I didn't crash that. Oh, wait, I did...

Is the BMW up to chasing Shacky's Ducati?
Is the BMW up to chasing Shacky's Ducati?
Fortunately such treacherous thoughts as that are a long way from my forebrain as I follow my instructor out of the car park and on to my fourth lap of the day.

Frank Schackmuth, or Shacky as he's called, is a tyre tester for Bridgestone and lives in Nurburg. He's led our fast group for three laps already this morning. The first was glorious, early sun rising, misty trees and fog in the valleys. But in the last 30 minutes the fog has burnt off and the pace warmed up considerably. I started at the back of the group, and between each lap I've crept forward a place. That's how the convoy training works. So now it's my turn to chase the tail-pipes of Schacky's booming 1198cc Ducati.

It's been a while but Dale's got the bug again

I won't say the BMW makes such a task easy. Maybe 'easier'. The power is ludicrous, and while my mate Andy reckons the suspension is a little too harsh for his pipe-cleaner frame, both the front and rear damping suits me much better. With the traction control on and set to race, I've still got the yellow light flashing away merrily on most corner exits. I'm not sure why, as the standard-issue tyres aren't even near the limit.

The wagging of the bars is held in check by a steering damper somewhere, but it doesn't really intrude. Unlike the traction control, which chops power the moment the front wheel sees daylight. Which is pretty much every other corner here.

Trying to keep these in sight was tricky

You can watch the video below to see what I'm talking about, but check out how easily the S1000RR keeps the big Ducati in sight on corner exits such as Hocheichen (one of the three key exits on a quick lap of the Nordschleife).

Lap four is tough work, physically, as I'm so out of shape. But adrenaline, like silver duct tape, fixes everything. When the other three members of the group stop for water and suspension tweaking, Shacky and me hit the track for two more laps of the Doc Scholl lead-follow format.

I'm still buzzing right now, six laps and two weeks later.

Thanks to Doc Scholl

Great video. Dale does it again. With ringside seat and Chris Harris on cars I think PH has quite a nice combined offering for anyone who wants to be permanently distracted!

Superb video! And some lovely skils on demonstration there; very impressed. Did the 'Ring on two wheels myself a few years ago (GPZ 600R). Thought I was fit beforehand; not at the end I didn't. I pushed hard but by the end of a single lap, without the benefit of a 'scout', I ws done for, physically and mentally. Fantastic experience though.

Great vid thumbup, I'm really interested in how the traction control works on the S1000RR as my last bike like yours didn't have it, can you just essentially pin the throttle open out of corners and it will take off at the limit?, without having to worry about losing the back and crashing?, I'm looking at getting one of these now the 2010 ones are sensible money used.

How can SOTW, featuring a MG ZS get over 200 comments and this piece can only muster 8 comments, brilliant video, more of this type please.

Meaning you would think more than 8 people would be inspired to comment on this when over 200 are inspired to comment on shed of the week. Shed of the week has its place but not a match on this piece.

ROFLMAO!! Indeed - i have no idea why. Perhaps its that the majority of PHers dont give a toss about bikes but I have no idea why thats the case either. Just cos you dont own one for whatever reason doesnt mean you can't appreciate them. I dont own a plane but if there was a piece by one of the Red Bull Stunt pilots or even someone who owned a Cessna or whatever I'd read it and comment!

The article came on after hours on Friday and they only posted it third up after articles like shed which was obviously older. A bit of shed protectionism by the PH management?

Performance on 2 wheels is much more affordable, so the good weekend weather meant PH2ers were out riding their dream rather than sitting hunched over a keyboard bemoaning a lack of cash to afford driving the dream. Although if Friday's shed was your dream you'd be better spending the grand on therapy.

well for my part I dont have the right size balls to try that, nor the desire to die anytime soon trying to get some.
wasnt it 3 weeks ago someone went to a funeral of a biker who died on the same track ??

From dust to dust. The life you fit in between those two states is entirely up to you. My choice is better than Thorpe Park rides, and I don't have to stand in a queue of sweaty armpits for 70 minutes to between corners (although the M40 in close in tedium stakes).

Nice write-up Dale. I got all sentimental and started looking at old footage of my friends and me on bikes at the Ring in 1999/2000/2001. Its incredible to think that in the middle summer the car park was 50% empty. As you get old you feel more mortal and switching to cars for the Ring was a good call. Although a Ring closed bike sessions would be very tempting, it definitely seems to be the best and safest way to enjoy the Ring on two wheels.

See you on Sunday Dale!
