Point about the Atom....

Came up in discussion the other day that the Atom weighs 500kg, with, in some cases, a 2 litre engine. So that'll mean it'll do about 40mpg right? So it goes like stink and doesn't cost much to run?

Running costs should not be the top of your priorities if you are buying a car without windows, doors or a roof. Its hardly likely to be your main daily driver is it?

As a daily driver I'd recommend a mondeo, if you can't afford one then perhaps a bmw as a long distant second best.
