What did you do in the garage yesterday?

Just utilising the superior heads that I have.
Better heads + blended base and a little remapping.
I've junked the engine driven PS pump to tidy up the front of the engine and possibly gain one bhp and have fitted the electric pump.
All in all I hope to gain about 20 bhp and to move the torque up the scale.
As to gearing, it feels fine for normal use although it always feels that the gearing is too far spaced for the track.
Is it still on hydraulic lifters ? I thought those lifters were for high revving engines .Better heads + blended base and a little remapping.

When can we expect to see the RR results Peter? Better heads + blended base and a little remapping.

That's all very well Richard and I wish you a very smooth transaction without any hiccups but you do know that you actually have to do something on the car, not just admire it within the four walls
I'm planning on spending day one sitting under the car port that extends out from the garage, on a comfy chair with a small table next to it, bottle of wine on table, garage doors open, staring at beastie, and quaffing steadily through the day, occasionally eating cheese.Obviously I'll post information about the day's activity on here, and provide a recommendation regarding the wine and cheese, with particular reference to the merits of Italian cheese versus French cheese, a subject which is quite close to my heart, and, whilst not being an expert, do have strong views on. Oh, and photographs.. mustn't forget the photographs....
I'm also planning on growing chillies again, something I haven't done for a while, in fact not since I had a chilli article published in Sprint magazine a couple of years back (yes, that's right, published!).... I'll be potting up in the workshop, so I'm thinking that might qualify for a few posts too

How did you get on with them under the purple covers? Spacers?
Yes, used the steel spacers from V8Tuner.Engine hasn't run yet but should be ok.
I am getting another set made out of machined billet rather than laser cut jobbies

Bloody rear crank seal started leaking though

Yes, I know it looks like an explosion in a blue silicone factory and, yes, I know there is a lot of tidying still to be done
Looking great Gary looking forward to seeing it and the results. I think it's fantastic that so many are putting time and effort into improving these cars and taking so many different approaches too. macdeb said:
I must've been lucky as mi9ne sealed first time. Though I did spend some time getting them straight first then moving the mounting holes slightly so they lined up with head mounts, black silicone sealant to underneath and blue hylomar on top.

Could that be crankcase pressure?Bloody rear crank seal started leaking though

Thanks Mac - interested (obviously) in your oiling issues. What breather set up do you have; is it vacuum driven or just to atmosphere?Pupp said:

Fitted the crank and pistons back into the block after much cleaning. With much appreciation to a certain Ben of engine building fame for guidance and some assistance.
Anything definitive found to account for the issue Alan? The 3.9/4.2 engine has balancing issues that the other variants don't have due to an issue from when the development work was done. How does he know? Because the company his brother (John) used to run , and for whom he worked, did (at lease some of) the development work on the engine. Land Rover took the specs they supplied but forgot to make specific allowances for the bearings in the balancing.
Since Rover didn't realise this until type approval had been completed, it was then too late/too expensive to rectify so they tried to overcome the issue by balancing taking out the imbalance by compensating in the flywheel and pulley.
Hence it matter little on other variants of the engine if you swap flywheels and pulleys but on the 3.9 engine it is important that either the engine is kept with its original flywheel and pulley OR that they are balanced separately and latterly as a unit for fine tuning.
So, it was out of balance then? Surprised by that as I understood that particular builder neutral balances each individual part of the rotating assembly. Glad you got it sorted in any event. Take it all otherwise ok inside?
There's a book in all that RV8 development history stuff - I mean the personalities and who did what and why. Good luck to whoever sets out to research and write it 'though!

Hi Gary, I have two catch tanks fitted, one on each bank of cylinders and vented to atmosphere. Pupp said:

Yes it was out of balance but considering the man who did the balancing for me does all the balancing work for the supplier of the engine and he took one look at it and said he hadn't been in there before tends to suggest that the supplier had tried to short cut the process. Perhaps he thought putting the engine in a slow revving environment (P5B) that it wouldn't matter or maybe he didn't know of the issues. You're dead right about the book. The background and relationships is certainly 'entertaining', never mind the factual stuff.
