Higher compression motors defiantly need to run Knock control

I have heard that setting up knock sensors on these engines is notoriously dificult, is this just myth and do you have experience setting them up on rv8's dom?

Very difficult because you have to make the engine knock before you can actually wright the program which Mbe do if new programs are required ,this is were your real boffins get involve 14hrs of rolling road knock testing on my 5ltr sag was rather interesting smile

Isn't it easier to program in the sound of the engine running as it should and then simply retard on anomalous sounds within the obvious frequency range? As 'pinking' can occur over a range of frequencies but is easy to detect as a change from norm, while an engine when correct will have static frequency?

Smart Ecus are programmed to listen to knock before the engine actually knocks, technology I love it.

Does that mean you can set the spark table advanced for economy .

Well, like a dog, it can hear before humans.

But, it seems logical to define a system to react to deviations from a norm than hunt for a specific anomaly?

Daz an engine wont knock while cruising/economy mode, knock mainly works at high throttle opening

Just out of idle interest has anyone here actually confirmed their claimed 12:1 CR by properly buretting the chamber etc? Custard needed?

Just what I've been told by engine builders.
simply speaking running 12-1 on a rover engine would just be a timebomb! even a race engine wouldnt hack it!

That was the one thing no one told me when i stuck the blower on...its eff'n thirsty!...oh yeah, you can cruise down the motorway feathering the throttle at get 33 mpg (i did it once!) but most of the time, even a 20 min journey its impossible to NOT press the loud paddle and it will eat a fifteen quids worth easily!

Use to think the same but times have changed with modern smart ecu's, i wouldn’t be worried running 12:1:0 compression with a knock control system..

12:1 still seems high to me for Peters engine.
A 4.6 block with 4.0 pistons. I thought we were looking at low 10's CR
The block and heads must have lost a fair few thou to reach 12:1 and squish would be nice and tight.

sorry dom disagree with that one bud, a rover engine running 12-1? you would have to back the timing off so far you would be loosing power so whats the point?

I would expect good economy on cruise even with a Turbo bolted on ..

Diesels Have Turbos and they do pretty well.
