Impreza steering rack mod
Discussion
Right. I've bought a 19mm diamond tipped carbide burr that I will have to use in the battery drill. I'll remove as much material as I can by raining death from above drilling a series of ~5mm holes through the offending section of plate, then go at them again from an angle to weedle as much more out as I can. Hopefully the remaining tree stumps will succumb to the mortar fire burr, then finishing off any survivors with the light infantry files.
Hi Chaps.
Pretty sure all of my parts are in and my QuickJack has arrived. Just working on order of service and I'm left thinking about the hydraulic lines. Specifically, their length.
I'm going to go to a third party to have the lines made up. Impreza rack and Vauxhall pump.
Did you all test fit these two items, get a rough idea of length with a bit of string, or similar and then head out to your chosen supplier.
Or.
Do they provide you with the boys and you cut the lines to suit as you install them?
You tips are, as always, invaluable!
Thanks, Mark

Test fit and measure the lengths then take the parts to whoever and they make it all go together, is the advice I think.Pretty sure all of my parts are in and my QuickJack has arrived. Just working on order of service and I'm left thinking about the hydraulic lines. Specifically, their length.

I'm using the TVR pump so I just took the old lines in.
Looks like I'll be joining the scooby rack club soon, as I'm pretty sure my rack is on the way out. Great info in this thread so fairly confident that the conversion is doable. Mines already a PAS car, so probably stick with the stock serp pump, but will also investigate the electric pump option.
Before I start, assembling the parts just wanted to check the best option is for the rack. There appears to be 3 different specs for GC8 classic impreza, 2.75 turns lock to lock, 2.5 and 2.25. What's the general consensus on the best ratio for the Chim? I'm thinking 2.5 but thought I'd check before buying.

Update on my install. In the words of Captain Darling, "Bugger".
I don't know what's wrong here, perhaps I'm a victim of the 'Blackpool ruler'.
The carbide burr turned up just before a weekend away but I managed to steal a few hours and it has done the trick in removing most of the offending section of the corner plate. Along with much filing, I'm in. Does the rack now fit?
Does it fk.
That is with the o/s clamp secured pretty much full on and the n/s sitting on the spacer bracket - not fastened in, but if anything tightening that end up will make it worse because the n/s will rotate 'up', pushing the o/s down further.
The M14 HP fitting is just clear of the chassis but the HP hose fitting won't go on - it fouls the cross member still. I could fit the hose and then final fit the rack but that will mean the fitting fouling the cross member anyway. (i) rack will be supported on the fitting, not the bushes and bracket so, not secure and (ii) stress on the fitting meaning likelihood of leaks.
If I hold the rack in a position where the fitting is clear, then I have this problem:
The closest point of approach of the UJ to the chassis vertical leg is about 1 mm at most. With the rack sitting where it wants to, there is this much:
I'm happy enough with that, after fetching a bit away from the corners of the UJ.
TBH I'm getting a bit hacked off with this now. The only salvation is that the TVR rack is borked so the only way is forwards, or forking out for new s/h rack and rebuild (for which cost I might as well trailer the car to Topcats or APM and have them finish this off!).
Saturday I'll take the rack, photos and fittings back to the hose builders and see if they can supply or make a M14 bump-whatsit fitting that terminates in a 90 degree plain tube, that can then fit the hose. Sort of like this, but one piece and without the knuckle in the middle:
Bloody cars!
