Can anyone tell me what braking system is used for the 4.0ltr chimp (circa 1995)? I'm assuming it's either Ford or Vauxhall!!

My 96 500 Chim has Ford calipers, I'd reckon the 4.0 would be the same. Sierra or Granada I think. Peter Beeches workshop notes (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Peter_Beech/TVR/Index.htm) has this info.

Its Ford essentially Sierra or Escort. There are about 6 different variations in disc size, calliper size and so on.

Best advice is measure and compare to the original.

Thery are off various Fords -- there are more details in this dicussion here: www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=7755&f=8&h=0&hw=brakes

And it's NOT A CHIMP. Chimps have long hairy arms and make 'oo-oo' noises. Your Chimaera has an oily lump of ally up front and makes growling noises...

Seconded! If people want to call 'em Chimps where's the harm?

I'm with Manek - maybe Ted's autocensor stuff could replace it with Cp

I agree with Manek about the name - the only cars that should have stupid nicknames are from Italy and Germany.

Sybaseian - I think it is endearing that people call them chimps. Personally I'm too stuck up to do so, but to prevent others from doing so seems to be almost PC.

Also, manek I think we have all understood now that you are, for want of a better term: 'well 'ard'.

Can someone shed some light on 'chimp'. Where did it come from? I can understand 'Chim' because it's shortened but where did the P come from?

Oh, and I think 'Chimp' is awful - everyone to their own.

I must admit Chim-puppy is growing on me as an alternative to Chimp...

OK disregard all previous postings: Chim-Puppy is beyond the bounds of good taste and should be BANNED!

Its pretty easy to see where Chimp comes from. Griffith gets shortened to Griff, which sounds fine. Shorten Chimeara in the same fashion and (if you pronounce it Tchim-aira, not shim-eera, or shim-aira or Kai-meera, or Kai-maira - how do you eat yours? ) you get Chim. (or Tchim!)

Which sounds crap somehow, so add a 'p' and away you go.

Incidentally, the correct pronunciation (and I don asbestos as I write) is Kai-meera: see below, courtesy of www.wordsmyth.net

quote:
chimera (chimaera)

Part of speech: noun
Syllables: chi-me-ra (chi-mae-ra)
Pronunciation: kih mi rE; kai mi rE
Definition: 1. a mythical fire-breathing female monster with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a snake's tail.
Similar Words: monster, Gorgon
Definition: 2. a fantastic, often horrible, idea or image produced by the mind.
Synonyms: phantom (1;2), apparition (1), specter (1), phantasm (1)
Similar Words: monster, nightmare, bugbear, bugaboo, bogeyman, hallucination
Definition: 3. a living organism or structure that contains two or more genetically distinct tissues.
Similar Words: hybrid, graft1

Which incidentally also resolves the old is it a he or a she debate - they are all bitches.

So you see, Chimp is a bit of a stretch, derivation wise, even if you are in the habit (as are many) of mispronouncing the name. And there is no way you could argue Chimp as a derivation of Kai-meera, unless you are MadCop.

So .....

can't wait to get my Kai back from Peninsula!

(That better Manek?)

I'm a kai rather than tchai or shai person. How do you pronounce yours?

I guess 'kai' people go for 'Chim' (kim) and they don't like chimp. 'tchai' people go for 'Chimp' and don't like 'Chim'. As for 'shai' people, well they probably keep there opinions to themselves
