Hi, just logged on for the first time and would really appreciate some tips anyone might have on buying a chimaera. Test driving some this week, a 4, 4.5 and a 5. Have heard of some expensive bills, especially about roting outriggers. Any help realy welcome. Going to walk the dog now and dream of that exhaust note....hope to hear of reply later.

Condition and history, do you have any links to the cars you are interested in?

Look at lots too, go to a dealer even if you wish to buy privately just to compare a lot of cars side by side.

Buy Steve Heath's guide to Chimaeras and Griffiths (also known as 'The Bible') invaluable reading prior to and during ownership.

If you find a car you are serious about, put up a post on here there is generally always someone on here who will go along and give you a second opinion when bribed with a pint!

Good luck - exciting times!

Edited to say...

I see you are in Devon, I'm in Plymouth and be happy to help if I can.

Buy carefully, as the above posts have already said. pay a specilaist to check it over if buying privately, and then go for it. Had mine 6 months, drive it every day in traffic (not its best environment) and love it.

Oh, and yes it is true, blue ones are faster.

Hey thanks, seeing a 4 and 4.5 tomorrow in Peninsula, but fear they wil be too pricey. A 5 at the weekend up north. Corin, thanks for the contact, will let you know how I get on.
But hey, I'm a Lotus Elan driver, but since getting this TVR bug, its all I can think (and sadly talk) about.

Test drive as many as poss

fall in love with them all

and then, ah what the hell go for it.

Where up north? I'm in Manchester area if you'd like to buy me the above aforementioned pint. In return, the obligatory spin in mine, and as much biased encouragement as you can bear.

But remember, blue ones are faster

While you're up there, the Cureton Green 4 litre Chimaera up there for sale (reg 28 DUO) is my old wagon!

Hi Steve1c. Any clues on budget / age you are looking at, etc? Many ppl would say the serpentine engine (one belt goes round loads of pulleys at the front of the engine) and later gearbox (reverse opposite 5th) are preferable.

More controversially... if I knew then what I knew now I would probably look for one with properly upgraded suspension.

However, what I actually did was buy the first one I drove!

Hi Steve in my opinion employing an independant inspector is well worth the money to ensure that what youre thinking of buying is all it appears and there are no nasty suprises just waiting to be discovered!

I used Rob Ingleby who advertises in Sprint, www.findasportscar.co.uk and was thoroughly pleased with his services including HPI check and full written inspection report.

He will travel anywere in the UK and frequently knows where prime examples are available might be worth a call.

18 months ago mate. And I have now seen something I really fancy so expect plugs on every chimaera thread!

Going to wait and see if I can sell the Chimaera before I committ o anything. Suffice to say something has really caught my eye (thanks for the link Dusty ) and it virtually has a bow around it and a card with "merry xmas shnozz" sat on the windscreen
