Hi All
I need to undo the large nuts that hold the rear wheel hub in place on a Chimaera. I don't have a socket large enough so before I go and buy one I wanted to check the size. I measured it as 41 mm but not sure if it is a metric or imperial size. Does anyone know?
Thanks

I don't know the the size but I will offer some advice. Don't tighten or untighten the nut using the drive train as resistance. You must either have the wheel on the ground or fix the hub using a long bar bolted to the lug bolts. The torque is too much for the LSD to withstand.

Yes, 41mm. Would advise getting a 3/4" drive socket.

Thanks for the advice. I am doing a complete strip down, clean, paint and rebuild so hub carriers are already off the car.

Haha, that's not necessarily a good thing, I hope you have a strong vice on a very heavy bench. These hub nuts are tighter than you'd expect

My local mechanic reckons he gets most hub nuts off just using a pneumatic impact wrench, this does sound the easy way if it's powerful enough?

decent length bar on that 3/4 drive 41mm socket will produce more torque than a windy gun wink they are not that tight trust me smile

I used a 1/2" drive windy gun when mine were off and no problems. So long as the gun isn't tired I'm sure it will undo them ok.

Don't forget the threads are handed differently for n/side and o/side. They really aren't too difficult to loosen - I've taken them off with 1/2 inch drive breaker bar and at other times with cordless impact wrench. 1st gear + handbrake worked for me.

Not if the hubs on the bench ... wink

Windy guns are okay, if you have a windy making machine!

They are now undone! I managed to wedge the hub carrier between wooden blocks on garage floor, place a strong metal bar between the wheel lugs and jam it against bench legs. Then 41mm socket with 3/4 inch breaker bar and plenty of elbow grease did the trick. Thanks for all your suggestions.
