Power Steering Noise

My power steering is quite noisy, is this normal? I can only describe the noise as a kind of 'hydraulic' noise.

Is this normal or a sign of things amiss?

They usually give a hissing sigh of relief type noise at the end of their travel.

By the end of their travel do you mean on full lock, or when you stop turning the steering wheel?

I only notice it at slow speed, such as putting it in the garage etc...

could alos mean your low on PS fluid, check it !!

Check the fluid, but in my experience it would appear that TADTS

Of the ones I have driven, some really can be pretty noisy at the extremities of lock. Ditto on the fluid check.

Holy thread resurrection Batman!

My power steering has always made a 'hydraulic' noise at full lock, but in the last week it has started making a new noise.

It sounds like what I can only describe as a dentist's drill, and the pitch seems to be dependent on engine revs, and it happens when steering to any extent rather than at full lock.

Any suggestions? TATDS? Wear ear plugs? Turn the music up?

Try changing the fluid,no one gives a change interval for this but all oil wears out eventually and it can sometimes work wonders by stopping moaning & groaning there is a filter in the resevoir this may be blocked with silt or may just need cleaning causing oil starvation to the pump hence noise,possibly a sign of pump failure,never hold the steering on lock if you can help it its bad for the systems valving and seals.

On looking in Halfrauds, they have a few different PS fluids - one says its for GM systems,
and one for Fords - anyone any idea of the difference, or what is suitable for a 1996 Chimaera?

dexron 11 or 111 will be fine,its slightly better quality than just TQF fluid,the system is not demanding anyway.

My power steering also groans, but mostly when the steering wheel is at between 1/4 and 3/4 turns (gently turns etc). However at full lock or when nagotiating tight twists and turns, I can't hear it...

How do you check the fluid level and where is the filler?
