God Damn Tea Leaves (Insurance Rant)
Discussion
Time of the yr again,
looking forward to a nice cheap renewel,
was all on track down from £2k to £1500. all going fine..
Then someone convinces me to get a Mark Adams chip, so, I call them and ask, How much will you sting me for this chip..... £65 they say..
Hmm says me, sounds reasonable, BUT, how much come renewel, oh she says £65 should be the same them, its a one off fee...
Hmm says me, Ok..
Now, insurance renewel comes thru £1900...
WHY? cos they loaded it £400 for the Chip...
Call and rant and rave at em, explain how EVEN with the chip, cars not making anywhere near TVR's figures.. so, how can they class it as a BHP increase when its not increassed over 'stock'
Their response.. fine.. we will remove the chip off the policy as your car doesnt make more power then stock,
HOWEVER, IF you claim, and we discover the car has been modified in such a way as to make even 0.1% more power then WITHOUT the mod, you will be in the shit.
Hmm, Say I, what about if i replace my air filter with a new one, that will increase power...
Guy mumbled about being sorry, but that was what he been told!
GRR..
SO, I call around..
NOWHERE wants me,
23, owned car a yr, 3yrs ncb, no claims, only 3 pts from 2 yrs back!! excellent area..
Mannings said 'come back in 2 yrs, and its £700' for now, sorry..
privaledge, liverpool vict, sorry, your too young for such a powerful car..
Looks like I am gonna have to pay Tescos the theives
Annoyed is not the word.

At risk of annoying people on here ask yourself a question :
If you owned / ran an insurance company would you insure a 23 year old with a V8 TVR ?
I wouldn't - not at any price. I'm surprised they're not quoting gross premiums of £10k. Actually, I'm surprised they quote at all.
Sorry !

hmm,
7 years of claim free motoring not enough for you ?
I actually took a step down in powert for the TVR..
but I do take your point...
I wouldnt write off anyone who had the credentials to back up their car...
IE Claim Free Motoring, no silly points for drink / drugs, and some ncb.
i know sensible 18 yr olds and mental 40 yr olds, the world spins in different ways...
on the whole, I would agree that the younger generation are more of a risk, I would say the only higher risk grp are the 40 summins on bikes...
but i digress..
my age shouldnt matter, what should matter are my 7 years of driving, 5 of which in super cars / bikes, with 0 claims..
I was told quite categorically, were I 18 mths older, my premium would be £700 instead of £1800
thats almost £100 a month discount.
Thats what I am objecting too... but I realise that companies need policies

I bought a Chim 500 when I was 23 just over a year ago and found some outragous quotes - average was between 4 and 5k!!! However, called Direct Line and they insured me for 2k. Out of interest I had zero no claims as well (though I did not have any claims from 6 years driving on parents policies)... I would try them.
oh
thing is I have been in cars with a few teenage and early 20s drivers and their ability (apart from the odd driver) is scarily poor... lack of observational skills for one, acting like they are invincible also... and immediately I understood why my insurance premium is relatively high. But I'm not about to start insulting my friends

Weird
Tesco / Direct Line / Priviledge are all the same comapny behind the scenes
Priv refused to quote as i was under 25, even tho they insured me on my 98 GTO Twin Turbo :/
I said i was thinking of calling direct line, and she said dont bother, their even stricter than us,
tesco is the only one who 'takes the risks' as she put it :/
will try em tomorrow anyway.

Ooops - sorry about the double direct line prompt there. I don't work for them, honest. I shopped around a lot and most places would not touch me. I don't recall trying Tesco but I was repeatedly told by people that D.L. are cheap and not particularly cagey about young drivers/fast cars... Good luck!
Back to ranting! I got my Chim in August. £700 fully comp with NIG. So far so good. Then they got my proof of no claims (5years) "sorry, you had an accident 2 years ago - we're putting your premium up" okay, you asked for my no claims bonus when you did the quote and it's 5 years, you didn't ask for any accidents in the last 5 years. Clearly protected no claims is worth very little if you move insurer.
Anyway, I paid a further £180 to keep them happy. Premium is now £880. Today they ring me up and say. "We don't have proof of an immobiliser being fitted" No. As I told you before - it's factory fitted. No fitting certificate. "And we need proof that you've driven a performance car before or your premium goes up to £1000!" I had a Nissan 200sx turbo before my last car (a scabby runabout shed!).
So the upshot is I've told them to cancel the policy. I'll get my insurance somewhere else. Sunninghill have just quoted me £976. Can Anyone do better? I'm 35, married, 10k miles on a 97 4.0 Chim.
Insurers - there's a special corner of Hell awaiting them.

Had exactly the same trouble with NIG regarding immobilizer. I too told them to piss off and got a much better deal through PEART.
