very faint burning rubber smell

Occasionally, I get a whiff of burning rubber smell from outside the cabin. I only tend to notice it (but not exclusively) when the cooling fans are on - pushing air through the engine bay. However if I then have a good sniff around the bonnet vents, or with the bonnet up, I can't seem to find the source of the smell.

Is there anything else I should sniff?

I sometimes get the same smell - usually goes when I change into 3rd......... sorry, isn't this the Griff forum.......?

At risk of spoiling an amusing interlude from the Griff girls ...

You might want to check your engine mounts. The passenger side one on mine melted and sheared completely in two. It gets a wee bit hot sandwiched between exhaust and manifold. Could be the elusive burning rubber whiff.

If yours is a 500 of course, the ladies might have a point.

Had a similar thing a while back - turned out there was no 'water' in the battery.!!

It was obviously heating up and smelling of burning (rubber / plastic) - you know what I mean.

Changed battery and it never happened again

Maybe try taking your foot of the break, friction you know!

When I had that smell the nuts which connect the big fuse in the battery box had come loose. This caused the bolts to get hot & melt the plastic cover. I only found out what it was when the fuse eventually fused. All that was left of the casing was a charred blob!

..I also had it when we put the alternator belt around the pulleys in the wrong sequence.

Now I read your post again you say the smell is strongest out side. When the belt was smelling it smelt worst from the outside.

Maybe it's the toxic blend of hair spray, hand cream and babysham. If I remember rightly, from my chemistry lessons, it forms a carbon based molecule known Chimgas:
