Hello folks!

Checked the car into austecs yesterday and my fears were confirmed: car needs anew cam.
Search is not working so could any of you give me advice on which cam to go for ( mc1, mc2,
404h, piper or else).
Car is 4.0 with slight mods: polished heads, lightened flywheel, precats removed, act silicon induction and it'l
get a MA chip and maybe new trumpetbase after the repair.
I would be most gratefull for any feedback.

thanks Jens

P.S.:Car is used for fast road driving, no races or sprints. I almost never rev it past 5k.

A 218 or hybrid is the best compromise imo, lots of tq and a bhp increase as well.

I went for the MC1 with ACT trumpets and I'm happy with the result, very drivable in slow M25 traffic and a noticeable improvement in power and torque.
All this with no remap as well.

camshaft choice can be bewildering and it all depends on you,not what anyone else thinks really.Obviously the difficulty lies in knowing how each one will behave compared to what your looking for,but you dont really say what your looking for in your post.If you need the best manners low down and do a lot of town driving then you might not like the cam i use for instance, which is the H404.This cam has lots of top and mid range, but can be a bit lumpy down the bottom end under 2k revs, particularly if you dont have mapped ignition(makes a good difference).Rob(v8 racing) has just developed his latest masterpiece camshaft which apparently has great low down manners like the MC1,but sounds like it has a stronger mid and top end also-sounds brilliant.Theres a thread about this on the engines forum at the mo.
I'd recommend you talk to the guys at V8 Developments or Rob about what cams they do and what your looking for.It could be easy to get lost in the sea of replies you get on here

I went to real steel, and i got a Typhoon camshaft, more reasonably priced than most it was a 218/220 combo, my 4.6 with this in made 296bhp, with big valves and a set up, a few other bits too. i built this motor earlier this year and will be going in the Chim i bought this Tuesday. In fact took the 4.0 out today!!

Thanks guys!

Please keep the input coming.
Good manners from 1.5k onwards are importand for me.
Will talk to Rob and of course Paul from Austec before i decide.
Does anybody know the difference between the mc1 and mc2?

Cheers Jens

I'm running an MC1 form V8D as well. Pulls nicely throughout the range and as smooth as the preverbial infants arse.

Give V8D a call

I ran a whole stack of rv8 and ford cams (same rocker ratio) throught a software programme and the 218 hybrid from v8d was a gem. It gained bhp but not at the expence of lost torque. I can't remember if I was able to compare it to an MC1 but Rob would be able to comment on how they each compare.

I went for an mc1 rather than something wilder to retain driveability 'round town - it's a big improvement on the original tvr435 profile. There are a lot of good profiles around and I'd recommend speaking to V8 Developments to go through the options - they're very helpful.

IMHO it's worth checking the valve heights with the rockers off - mine had up to 4mm difference for no apparant reason - and you can't accurately set the preload in that state - I had them all recut and set to level and the engine now sounds really sweet with no tappety noises. If you're going to the expense of taking the heads off you may as well get the valve springs and seals changed etc etc.

Hi there!

JUst a short update: after talking to Paul I´m going for a 218.
It´ll be going in together with new softer valvesprings, which had not been put in when the camshaft went the last time. I´ll also get an ACTinlethose and a new trumpetbase. When everything is put together again the guys at Austec will even run it in for me so I can then have the MAchip and RR-setup before I drive it back home. Top chaps at Austec!

Cheers Jens

Hi

Just to hijack the thread a moment, what are the symptoms of the cam being on the way out? My 450 is still getting a ever-so-lovely tap-tap-tapping if you hold the revs at 2.5K in 2nd. It's done about 42K miles so it might be in need...any thoughts?

If this means a new cam I might go for the MC1 from V8D

Cheers

I fitted an MC1 earlier this year and I'm very very happy with it. Haven't had the fuelling/ignition mapped yet, but there's a noticeable increase in torque, especially lower down the rev range.

My old man used to have a Healey 3000 a while back. I don't know whether I was more impressionable back then, but although it wasn't outright quick, even in overdrive 4th at 1500 rpm if you so much as breathed on the throttle you'd feel the surge of torque in your stomach. That's where I'd like to get to with the chim - proper lazy man's overtaking ability!

Loss of power, misfire, a sort of "banging" sound at idle and the dreaded tap-tapping are all symptoms I know about.

Hello Woody

In my case i could hear a sound like you described but strangely only from time to time otherwise it was maybe a little down on power and shunty in the lower revrange but deffinitly no missfire. My previous owner had the cam replaced at 38 k and now it went again after exactly 38 k!

Cheers Jens

After reading this thread I had a chat with Rob (V8 Developements) about the lumpy running at sub 2000 rpm on my newly acquired V8D5.3 Chim.
It has a P404 (solid lifters with adjustable pushrods) installed at the mo which is really only suitable for racing, Rob won't fit these to road going cars anymore. I guess the previous owner was going for big BHP numbers regardless of drivability.

I had the car up at Joo's (TCS) recently for some suspension work and a quick run on the rollers to check fuelling and it produced 322 BHP with shed loads of torque. He was expecting more power but it seems this cam is at its best at the top end of the revs but the Rover plenum doesn't flow enough air.

I really don't like driving the car at the moment unless i know that the journey will be on open roads, its a real pig in traffic so i've booked it in for Rob's new "Stealth" cam.

Thanks for your input guys, it helped me make my mind up.

Andy
