S'charged TVR almost cooked

TVR Power's Chimaera project's nearly ready

Supercharged V8 in TVR Chimaera
Testing of TVR Power's supercharged TVR Chimaera project is now complete, the 4.0-litre car having undergone extensive mileage testing both on the road and track for performance and durability evaluation.

According to TVR Power, it's also finalised dyno testing and fuel mapping of the unique ECU chip, and achieved "excellent" repeated results. The car is making 275bhp and 280lb-ft of torque at the wheels, which TVR Power's Dom Trickett described as "not bad from the standard 4-litre".

The forced-induction V8 car will undergo further track evaluation during August to verify performance from the new chip, then the system will be available to owners of cars with the 4.0 litre engine.

The C30 Supercharger development is also complete for the 4.5 and 5.0 litre engine derivatives with fuelling and ECU mapping now underway, and TVR power hopes to release complete systems for these cars shortly.

275bhp at the wheels, not bad for a rover v8 based on 1950's technology. ( nearer 320bhp at the crank)

Key question is..... HOW MUCH?

Didn't Dom mention 4k previously? It's a standard engine too, and they were aiming for 5.0 litre power, which they got....
Sure there's loads more potential for extra power too

I got the impression that this is a sort of Takara II, the idea being more cost effective increases than normal work. It would be interesting to know what the engine was rated at before upgrading, so the % increases could be seen. This conversion is based on a standard engine (I believe), any more boost requires bespoke bits for forced induction.

Wonder how long the next phase will take, a full monty supercharged Griff running higher boost. This must pose serious issues though such as aero turbulance at high speed from the chest wig and stability of the drivers enormous medallion !!!

Not sure about the chest wig. If he's driving a supercharged 5L, its the aerodynamics of his enormous cahoonies you'd have to consider.....

It certainly looked and sounded good leaving 50 yard eleven's along Blackpool Prom with its bonnet off at the Back Home event last month.

Its always good to read your interesting comments regarding the Supercharger system. Not sure whether any of you guys are members of the TVR Car club, but this months issue includes an article written by the Assistant Editor following a recent road test. He is certainly qualified to formulate an opinion and to make a judgement. His comments were extremly favourable with regard to the power and smoothness of the system. Please remember, the SC400 was not developed to race potential, but to meet our objective of achieving similar performance to the 5.0 litre cars, without upgarding major bits.
Other derivatives in development will cover a range of Bhp up to 500hp+, still with the objective of maintaining driveability. Superchargers do not increase top speed, only how quickly you get there.
With serious Bhp, the aerodynamics of the cars are simultaneously being addressed for those who want to participate on Track days, the objective being to control weight transfer and improve stability, these aids include front splitters and rear air defuser designed to enhance the overall appearance of the cars.
Mark Hockin who races the 5.0 litre Griffith in the Dunlop Challenge is currently evaluating the rear air defuser, and I am pleased to say since fitting it, it hasn't been removed as it has reduced the severity of rear end breakaway and allows him to drive nearer the limit. As higher performance derivatives are released, the aero aids will be there offering improved stability.
The car and I will be at the Griff Growl 2006 this weekend at Ettington with Dom Trickett, so if you are there come and have a chat about the car, you never know you might buy one!

I got my Sprint this morning, and saw the article was mentioned on the front cover. I'll be reading that as soon as I get home.

Does it mention pricing, or are you able to confirm the rough cost?

thanks,
Darren.

We will release prices within 2 weeks when evaluation of the new ECU chip is finalised and the system signed off for release. Recently we added an oil cooler to the Supercharger system due to the oil temp running near the limit during the recent super hot spell, but that's what testing is all about. We also found with recent tests that an Intercooler was not necessary with the SC400 due to low boost and intake tempuratures, this being an affective cost reduction from our earlier cost assessments.

I've just spoken to Dom at TVR Power and he thinks £4k is going to be near the mark.

He also told me that a standard 5 litre gives 240 bhp AT THE REAR WHEELS and he's consistently getting 275 bhp AT THE REAR WHEELS from the Super Charged 4 litre and that the SC 4L is considerably quicker than a standard 5L.

That's a whopping improvement on the standard 4 litre engine.

I've e-mailed him my name and address to ask when the car will be in my area for a test drive.

Anyone spoken to any insurers about this mod?
Will I need to sell a kidney?
