Hi, I have a problem with my cooling fans, they are both stuck on, I have unplugged the otter switch and have checked the relay which is switched on all the time. Is likley to be the relay? if so is it a Ford part? Any and all ideas appreciated as I need the car for the weekend and am a long way from a specialist.
What happened when you unplugged the otter switch? If the fans stopped the otter switch is at fault. If they continued the relay is at fault.
Presumably both fans are on? Some cars had two relays, others just one. If you can identify the relay you can switch it with the main beam relay to test it - they're identical. Any motor factor will be able to replace the relay for a few quid, as it's generic.
If you can't fix it before the weekend it won't harm the car to drive it with the fans on, although it won't help the lifespan of the fans.

Hi, fans stayed on without the otter switch, I have new one as part of the Leven cooing kit. She did over heat when I first picked her up but that was due to the fans not comming on at all because of poor connections inside the fan conection blocks. I have opened up the relay and its definatly stuck on, will try swopping them now, if its not that I guess I might have a short somwhere.
This happenned to me. My car had a single relay which melted inside through being on too much in hot weather at high speed (150 plus on autobahn). Contunuous high current caused the problem. Re-wired with separate relay for each fan, problem solved.

Finally got it sorted. First I tried the relay from my 500 with no luck. Checking the wiring back, someone had soldered an extra wire (one of a pair that disappear into the wing of the car near the fuel pipes, the other is connected to the alternator)to one of the otter switch leads so they stayed on all the time, so they had been permanently on since I have had the car. If you wanted the fans on all the time, you would just stick a fuse across the connections wouldn’t you? The wiring to the otter switch had got hot at some time and melted the insulation so I removed the rouge wire, replaced the otter switch wiring back to the harness, fitted the new otter switch and thermostat (bloody fiddly) and flushed the system, refilling and adding coolant and water wetter. I also replaced the fan connector blocks too, just to be on the safe side. Now runs at a constant 80 degrees sitting in the garage and a bit above 70 round town.
