Noticed that my steering wheel is not quite central. Not sure how long it has been like it either. Car doesnt pull to one side when being driven nor under braking. No uneventyre wear, shaking rattling or banging. Not hit anything either, just noticed yesterday. Seem to remember a thread a while ago (That Daddy?) but cant find it. Just wondered if anybody had a similar issue before I book it into Walldenway for them to have a look.

Steering wheel not central..? It's a Chimaera, not a McLaren... hehe

Sounds like when the geo was done, the wheel wasn't straight.

blujay if you can give me the position of the spokes on the steering,i need to know what side spokes tilt left or right and how much, ill go through it with, you will find it a piece of cake.
Podie, i know its only trivial but when you drive the car and the wheel aint straight it just dont feel right,im sure you agree, still might be just me to many years at a dealer i guess.

Thanks Simon, When going straight the wheel is turning to the right, about half way between the screws, ie not enough to take the wheel off and move it round one.
Cheers

Is there any reason you can't pop the horn push out, unbolt the steering wheel boss, pull off the wheel and move it round a couple of splines until it's straight?

There are a couple of splined joints on the column (at the rack, at the top UJ and at the wheel) which could be off. Any of these could have been refitted one spline out. If it's only a small change and obviously not a whole spline I'd be inclined to correct it on the track rod ends.

james, you need to lengthen the offside track rod arm by by approx 1 full turn, thats anti clockwise, then shorten the nearside by the same amount, thats clockwise, that should correct your problem, this method is only used for slight error, otherwise you will un/centre the rack.it may take two goes just remember to think what your doing, this will not upset your wheel geometry by any amount providing you remember to add and subtract by the same amount.good luck keep me posted, sounds tricky its not,but it is proper.

Check your wheelarches / wishbones for scruffing, it might have been done for a reason?

I'm sure that daddy is right...

however someone told me that if teh wheels point out to one side when parked and some dork hits it then the steering rack gets bent - keep those wheels straight!

Gets mixed views on here, but I think it looks great, reblacked mine very well.Took about half an hour to do. Left it for 24 hours and then applied a coat of ultra proofer, which beads up nicely.
I'm in East Peckham so give me a shout if you would like to come and have a look. Where are you ? All the best.
