I'm looking to upgrade the gramophone in my '95 Chim, as the JVC headunit & Pioneer speakers aren't able to cut Mrs Falfa's Meatloaf at high revs.

Current Spec
Headunit: JVC 45Wx4 KD-S743R
Speakers: Pioneer 80w two way
(like I know what any of that actually means)

I don't want to break the bank, but I would like to be able to plug in my iPod and have a quality sound with the roof is down.

So, should I just upgrade the speakers? Do I need sound deadening in the doors (like the bloke in Halfrauds suggested)? Do I need speakers in the back? Can I still play my old 78s?

Reccomendations / suggestions gratefully received.

Sound deadening in the doors? Sounds like your Halfrauds man is a real expert on the acoustic properties of fibreglass. rolleyes Run, don't walk.

Just a thought I have an Alpine head unit which my ipod plugs into and I can access the ipod menu through the main Alpine interface. This work really well and means no loose cd rattling around the car.

Sounds just the sort of thing I'm looking for. Which Alpine unit is it? And what speakers do you have?

LOL. Good old Hallies. I did wonder if the advice he was giving me was pukker, when he asked if i'd like to buy some 19 inch Woolfrace Alloys & a tinted window kit.

I researched the topic of Ipod connections into headunits extensively and have used lots of different solutions in my cars. However the Alpine headunit is the best so far. The problem when onnecting the Ipod to the headunit is that if you control the ipod through the headunit it is so slow you will grow old trying to find a track. You will see lots of add on boxes and headunits saying "Ipod ready" (there is even a special icon for this) - but avoid - they are all so slow to select anythihg. The only solution was to find an ipod headunit with the "Full Speed" icon - some alpine headunits have this. I even took my ipod into the biggest care sterio shop in London and trialed them all - even they admitted that all the ones the recommend are too slow, the Alpine i got was about 10 times faster. I just checked and now they have lots of headunits that are full speed.

In the Chim i just run the ipod connection lead on the back of the headunit into the glow pocket on passenger side - plug in the ipod and leave it hidden in the pocket, the lead provides power and everything is hidden. Mine has been in there for 3 months now - no problems.

I've just put a half tidy kenwood cd dash mounted player. It's a good sound, but I have two 100w infinity speakers in the doors, and two 130w infinity speakers behind. It's a good sound, but I think the speakers make that happen rather than the head unit.
