Hi all,
just picked up my 1998 Chim on saturday and i would like to ask a couple of questions please,

1, What is the light on the dash board that glows red and looks like a star (mine is on all the time). just above steering cowl.

2, under the bonnet there is a alloy tank near the front, drivers side, what is this and should there be fluid in there? as mine is empty.

So far i am loving the car, did not buy it because i love the drive i bought it because of the noise, nothing like it. biggrin

1, Ice detector - generally considered to be utterly pointles and widely inaccurate. I've driven the Griffith in -8 and it didn't show a think wink

2, This is the expansion tank for the coolant system. There is a further alloy swirl pot in front of the engine. Coolant should be topped up through the epansion tank. I would start by leaving the expansion closed and chekcing the level in the ally pot in front of the engine. It should be nearly full, and any excess then drains to the expansion tank via a relief pipe near the top. The level should be just below this.

As long as that level is OK, then close it and fill the expansion tank 1/2 to 3/4 full.... Different cars settle at different levels and don;t be concerned too much if the level drops a little again, it is just being sucked in to supplement the system or kicked out if it's not wanted.

If however it continues to go dry, then you may have a further issue.

Most though just need a top up.

The Ice frost detector glows red when very cold, say (-) temperatures, and glows green when still frosty but probably just above freezing point.

The book says:

green = less than 4C
orange = less than 2C
red = less than 0C

mine seems to be reasonably accurate, though it's distracting when flickering between off/green or green/orange.

If the light is on all the time the chances are that the thermistor has failed or there is a broken wire somewhere.

The thermistor is in the front nearside wing around the headlight area.
