Inspection before buying
Discussion
I found the car, looked good but got Rob Ingleby of www.findasportscar.co.uk
to check it over, although he also does a complete finding service. definitely the best way for a mechanical moron like me!

I had Rob Ingleby check my car.I thought he was good, but could possibly have been a bit more critical.
It's also useful to have a good report when you sell the car.
There's a lot of stuff on checking a tvr in the 'bible',and also one of the engine rebuilders has a site telling you how to asses the engine/camshaft.
You need an open top to enjoy a sports car!

I had my car inspected by one of the above and it has cost me £ 2500 since so I would get a competent mechanic to inspect the car as I think he is overated.
IrebiboI see you're new to PH and it's your first post, welcome.
You might not know that we cannot post negative comments that name and shame.
For example we couldn't say
Arthur Daily, a little dodgy maybe.
But we can say
Arthur Daily, he's alright.
This can be misleading as you only hear one side of the story.
I dealt with one TVR sports car inspector and I wish I had dealt with Arthur Daily instead.

If the inspector looks at a bad car then this is probably obvious.
The real skill is for an inspector to look at what seems to be a good car and spot a hidden problem that's not obvious and will cost a lot to put right.
After I bought my car it went back to TVR Power to have its hidden problem sorted. A well known inspector was visiting Dom (who related this to me). The same inspector I had relied upon.
He commented that he recognised my car. Dom got lost his temper and said a few choice things that are unsuitable for a public forum to this inspector. He said that he should remember the car as he had cost me many thousands of pounds to put it right.
The inspector had no answer and slunk away.
I have since learned that the inspector had known of the faults prior to recommending me the car. The vendor had not long bought the car. I now know the vendor had discovered the faults. He had used the same inspector and had complained to him, thus making him aware.
I can only assume that the failure of the inspector to disclose these faults to me was a diliberate cover up of his previous mistake.
In previous similar threads a number of unhappy customers of this inspector always emerge and one guy has compiled a list of shocking failures. He emails this to anyone who asks about inspectors. I did have a copy, but lost it when my PC crashed. Can I have a duplicate please?
I recall people people buying cars to discover they were unroadworthy and dangerous. Cars with rotten chassis outriggers and many other things that anyone who claims to know these cars should have spotted.
If anyone is in the Kent area I am happy to let them read my history file. You can see for yourself the inspectors report saying no problem. Then only a few weeks later read the bills for working on those things that were good only weeks before according to that inspector. Why would I do that if the inspection was accurate?
Buying one off here, where you can check the sellers profile & history of postings, may give you a better advantage IMHO.
Cars that have been extensively modified are also more likely to have had other essential things done (without the song & dance seen in others) and are better bargains I reckon.
But be realistic, any circa 10 year old car is going to have some risk attached to it..

Yeah there is some risk in buying an old car but when you pay for someone to look at it who's suppose to know them inside out and you get a glowing report you dont expect things to go wrong so quickly, my roof seals were hanging off when I removed the panel but the report said in good condition the drivers mirror never worked properley, these were just 2 things i noticed when I got the car home 4 days after the inspection, I also had another car inspected prior to this one which I never brought and allegedly the same report was sold to someone else at half the price who brought the car but I would have thought the report was exclusive to me and not sold to someone at my expense. I thought nothing of it at the time just one of those things as I was new on the scene but as time has gone on and it has cost me alot of money my opinion has changed. I agree we all spend money on them but the inspection to put your mind at rest in my opinion is very overated, get someone who goes to a meet to have look and they will probably be more critical and do a better job for no money at all

send me a PM!Who is this inspector? I'm guessing its the same guy who looked at my wedge for a prospective customer last year. I thought the extent of what he checked was shocking. I'd spend a good hour looking over a prospective new car. All this guy spent was about 15 mins & he didn't look at any of the known problem areas. No jacking the car up, looking for loose bushes or bearings, chassis was not looked at, lights were not checked, suspension, UJs... the list was endless.
I'd rather trust my own judgement than use someone else unless there was a warrenty that came with the inspection.
