hi, someone knocked my wing mirror,{l reg chim}////passenger side--the glass and wing mirror itself are ok, but its not holding onto the car anymore,,its just loose.{hanging on my the black wire}.
Looking inside the part {where the wing mirror it self would fit on to the body} looks like a metal part has snapped.
Is this a major job?, or what the cost would be to fix this?
I have tried attaching rubber to stop it wobbling..and fallling off,-nothing will hold it in place....?

Its not a major job and you can get the little metal thing seperate to the mirror its just finding them thats tricky by all accounts.

Its a Citroen part so scrappies and the like are the order of the day. Sometimes dealers/independants have them but its a ringing around job...

Not having much luck this month are you Paul?

This happened to me a while back. I cut the wires to get the mirror off. Got the hole taped up. Then I found a mirror at the scrapyard and did a kind of combo job taking the broken metal bit out and replacing with the new one. Got the garage to do the fitting to the car bit tho cos I was too lazy to ever get round to doing it!

Has anybody got a 'spare' rubber o-ring which fits around the mirror body? For some reason (?) I have lost one! I think it's about 5 ins diameter.

Will pay the going rate for one!

I did mine some months ago.. again about £8 for the bit, and not a hard job.. I wrote something about it up on here somewhere I'll see if I can find it..

Cheers
Matt

Esdited to add:

Here it was..

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=11&h=&t=76441

..in your case you'll have to spin the broken bit of the tripod out of the door thread, and use a star drive to remove the rest of the tripod from up inside the mirror stem. then re-fit with the fresh part and go from there... you can do the whole thing in an hour.

Matt

Paul... really its a piece of cake.

remove speaker from door and unclip electric cable for mirror.

unscrew broken bit from car.. and detach locking ring from bottom of it noting the position at which it is attached to the tripod (broken bit). (keep an eye on the grub screw as the new part may not come with one)

undo star bolt holding other half of broken bit to the mirror, pulling newly unclipped cable from door.

attach purchased shiny new bit to mirror with star bolt just removed - do this up VERY tightly, or the mirror will wobble about. Attach locking ring to bottom of it in same position as it was removed from the broken bit

thread cable back into door.

wind the mirror round and round and round, to thread it back into the threaded hole. You'll end up doing this a couple of times to get the mirror position just right on tightening the grub screw.

clip cable electrics back together inside door, ensuring cable does not pass within the door glass channel (or the window will only wind down 1/2 way) Test mirror electrical functions

Replace speaker.

Job done.

Cheers
Matt.

Really no problem at all.. ..a really minor bit of advice too as you go along..wrap the mirror up in something before you start, that way you won't inadvertantly scratch it. Also when spinning it around to re-fit it to the car, keep and eye on the point where it passes the windscreen surround as this gap gets a bit tight.. you may have to "help" it past there for the final turn or two.

As for the part... phone 01423 561 666 and speak to Jim.. he'll put one in the post for you (Mirror Tripod). If you mention that "the bloke who bought the last ever S Series Steering rack off you" ..sent you, I'm sure he'll be extra helpful. (either that or tell you to off )

Cheers,
Matt

Oh and one other tiny thing.. you MAY find you have to separate the wires from the half of the connector block in the door before it will pass through the hole in the door-skin.. there is a removable clip in the block itself (orange in colour IIRC) that will enable each spade connector to come out... make a quick sketch of the locations of each wire, for re-assembly.

BTT - May have to make this a separate topic if nobody here can help.

Thanx.
