Red Snowflake Warning Light

Can someone please let me know what the red snowflake looking warning light is between the speed and rev counter? It came on, and then 15 minutes later switched off while driving this afternoon, and it did this twice. If this is a known problem can you also advise on how to fix it? The owners manual said something about the security alarm, but it wasn't that clear if it was talking about the same thing. Cheers.

I think you are describing the ice detector warning light. It goes from green > orange > red, where red is coldest temp range.

Green goes off at about + 4 degrees.

When you turn the ignition on it should cycle through red/yellow/green quickly (just once).

After that:
Red: sub-zero
Yellow: 0-2 degrees
Green: 2-4 degrees

I can't vouch for the accuracy, but if it's lit at all you should probably be a little careful.

BTW: Much to my surprise it doesn't seem to be affected much by the engine or cabin temperature. I don't know where the sensor is though.

They don't all go green-amber-red. Mine just goes red, although when you turn the ignition on, it does cycle through the 3 colours.

I wouldn't get too excited about it - mine used to come on and off at random and with no discernible connection between colour and any other environmental variable

Well thanks. Mine didnt go through the three colours, just straight to red, and it certainly wasnt too cold yesterday, just wet. Seems the sensor is a little over sensitive. Thanks.

Don't know exactly where the sensor is on the Chimaera, but on the Griff it is tucked under the front nearside - just about under the light pod IIRC. It gets all the crap thrown at it so it's a wonder it ever works at all.

Mine wasn't working when I first had the car and The Garage kindly fixed it with a new sensor for a couple of quid while it was being serviced. Has worked OK for three years now!

The evening Scoobz collected my TVR off me he called me about 15 minutes after leaving saying Fing hell! Theres a bloody great red snowflake on the dashboard, its not pissing coolant everywhere is it?'

It's in the same location on the Chimaera. The thermistor usually corrodes and goes O/C. Details and piccies in the second edition.
