More post flat battery woes

Hi,

I've just managed to let the battery of my Chimaera 450 go flat after carefully nursing it thru the winter!.

I've recharged the batt no prob and have it connected back up to the car but am getting no joy getting her to start.

Symptoms
Fuel pump is activating at stage II ignition altho it is not reducing in noise slowly like it normally does, i.e. usually if you let it whirr up then switch off and back on it typically dies off quicker the second time. wondering if there is a fuel shut off activated somewhere.

Whenever I turn the ignition off there is an odd rasping noise coming from the engine bay for about a half second or so?

I haven't reset anything except the immobiliser at the steering column as I have no idea how to reset other items.

Any help on what might need reset and how to do it (i.e. ECU, fuel cut offs, immobiliser, alarm) would be much appreciated.

I'd check that the battery connections are good and its holding charge.

Quickest way is to jump another battery (or car) to the battery leads, if starter is more vigorous then you have either bad connections or insufficient charge.

If you need a new battery Varta do a type 096 reverse (650cca) which fills the battery box and has the terminals the right way round.

Thanks, I probably should've said that the starter is not activating.

The symptoms are similar to the situation where if I try to start the car when the immobiliser is engaged, i.e. it locks out for 30 mins or so. all the prelims such as the fuel pump etc work fine but turning the key to stage III does nothing!

Is the engine cranking over alright...? if its turning over nicely I doubt its a battery issue.

do you get the relay click and the dimming headlamps though...?

It could well be the pre-engager in the starter motor sticking due to lack of use.

Ahh indeed that sounds like a possibility! i'll have a look on here and see if that problem has been covered before

This problem sometimes occured when the engine was running, then stopped for a short while, it would need a while to sit for 30mins before it would start again, perhaps it was sticking then too when it was hot (I thought it was the immobiliser cos it always followed a pattern and the prev owner thought this too!)

Sounds v. likely to me... just test it by putting your headlights on, and seeing if they dim when you turn the key to start. (..as the Starter is still drawing 100amps without actually working)

I had this problem the last time my batt went flat. After charging I must have accidentally knocked my brain into neutral as I tried to start it without resetting immobiliser. The alarm had gone to sleep so pressing the blipper did nothing. When I realised I poked the plastic bit into the recepticle and it turned over a treat!

Then I reset the alarm by disconnecting the battery for a few seconds. All fine since. Brain gearchange still a bit sloppy though.........

Hi,

Sorry it took so long, thanks to all who posted to help.

Turns out that either my batt is knackered or my charger isn't up to it. I connected a portable jump starter device and she came to life no problem.

Don't forget a lovely Accumate charger / conditioner to keep yer new battery fresh next winter.....
