Am looking at buying a Chimera and have sometimes thought that a V8 diesel would be an interesting option as a power source i.e. same/more power + highly tuneable torque which could return far improved MPG.

Setting aside increased engine weight, gearbox/clutch, diff, and renewed injection/ECU changes...has anyone modified a Chimera to run a V8 diesel??

Not wanting to challenge PistonHeads purists here, really to open up a discussion on thoughts, pro's/con's...and maybe the opportunity of having lower C02 emmissions + possibility of running Bio-diesels??

Does anyone have any further info/links to a V8 diesel-powered TVR?? Thanks, Andrew.

Weight would be a issue, Jupiter would weigh less than a diesel lump. And lack of nice crisp petrol v8 sound, dont see the point of doing it to a chim better off just buying a v8 Diesel car in the first place.

I like diesels.

I like my Alfa diesel engine (150 bhp), it does 50+ MPG is great to drive, but it sounds like a tractor.

I like the 3.0 V6 diesel (204 bhp) in my Mercedes van, it sounds a bit mean especially on idle.

I like to pull along side a V8 Scania truck and open the window just to have a sneaky listen wink

A two stroke diesel sounds very nice too.

But.......................................... in a TVR?

Na vomit , very wrong.

I'm guessing from your pistoheads ID that you run a Daimler 250 V8? Surely you wouldn't countenance whipping that V8 out and shoving in an oil burner? I agree with the other guys, plenty of engine options open on the Chim (I'm no purist), but a diesel? In a sports car? In fact, ANY sports car? Just silly

Right girls, get over yourselves.

Which diesel V8 would fit?

What 'box/conversion plate?

Cut and shut the propshaft?

Fairly easily achievable I would have thought. Doesn't mean it is going to happen, just could it happen?

Sorry, ETA a wink and biggrin in case you thought I was getting all up myself.

Aside from the sacrilege here, I think the ECU could be a show stopper the way everything is integrated together nowadays, not sure if there are any aftermarket ECU options for diesels.

While we are being silly and upsetting people I was looking at the Lexus V8 - I have seen complete LS400's sell for £200! Not sure it would fit though its a bit big, although Alan Whitaker on the S forum has got it into an S1.

There!

See, can be done. I would have thought the ECU would have gone with engine. Or swap out the loom for a LR diesel one, since it's already a LR loom?

I say go for it. It'll be an interesting project to see. In fact while we are on the subject has anyone ever considered LPG

Don't go there, amazing how many people are quite happy to have 50 litres of highly flammable petrol slopping about in a flimsy container a couple of feet behind them but get cry out in horror at the idea of some LPG in a far stronger, tested and certified cylinder bolted down anywhere near them ????

Exactly i got this for year with my old LPG jag people saying it was like a bomb in my boot rofl

yeah if it was a cow boy install which is why it needs to be certified for your insurance.

3 mins for petrol to go boom
12 mins for lpg tank to VENT!

I would have thought the weight of a V8D like the TDV8 in the Rangie would make the car very odd to drive.

I think you would have to go for a smaller engine and boost it up more.

The new JE Engineering TD6 has the kind of power you'd need to match a 5L RV8.

I'm sure there are some 4 pots that would do.

Having seen how the BMW diesels fly then the engines from the 123 or the 530 would be simply awesome in an uncomfortably freaky way.

I think their twin turbo diesel delivers more than their 3L straight six.

The issue there being the cost of breaking into the ECU which is why the John Eales engine might be the one as the work there is complete.
