Narrowed the clunk clunk clunk down to the diff eek When I turn one of the rear wheels the diff actually clunks

Getting tired confused and skint .

What parts are fitted with a rebuild and how much work is involved dropping the diff ,does this mean all the drive shafts etc will need changing .

its a bit of a pita to get at everything but not too bad.

driveshafts un bolt, 6 bolts each side iirc
then the prop another 4 bolts

diff mount a rear one bolt through chassis
if you need to take the bracket off the diff another 4 bolts

two front diff mount on chassis bolt and 2 diff bolts each side.

disconnect speedo wiring and remove.

Never seen a diff go clunk clunk clunk and still work before, they normally make that noise whilst making a mess on the floor.

Can you take the back off of it whilst its still on the car?

Kinell Daz. Took the words right out my mouth. Stay positive,at least with mechanical bits you can just change them. Its all that horse power, there's always a price to pay for power.

I might just fit the cover and leave it this year .. rolleyes

The problem is most of the specialists don`t want the car hanging around the garage foe ages while the diff is being built .

What makes the ratio because I don`t want it even more lower geared .

Why don't you just drop the diff out yourself? The money you will save on labour will more than cover the rebuild (around £350+VAT IIRC).

This will help:
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Also, have you checked the bushes? The top bush can be a git but while the diff is out it will be worthwhile to replace them. A worn bush especially the top one will cause lots of loud clunks.

I jacked one side up and got Collin (he came for my lights) He spun the wheel and I could hear noise coming from the diff .

The wheel goes tight loose ,tight loose.

That could just be a warped disc (always look on the bright side!). If you disconnect the drive shafts and the prop shaft then you can spin just the diff on its own to see if it is responsible.

Before you go taking anything to bits, try draining the fluid and putting some of the correct spec in or even adding a friction modifier to what's in there if you're sure it's right. LSD cones can and do get very noisy and snatchy on the wrong fluid.

My diff rebuilder advised me not to use all the fancy oils and just put regular gear oil in and change it with every engine oil change
