As part of the ongoing restoration I have upgraded to 278mm discs and Mondeo V6 (887/888) calipers. On fitting EBC red stuff pads I found the the inside one required a little filing to sit in the carrier and both pads sit beyond the outside edge of the disc.

Do I run as is and allow the pad to wear leaving an unworn lip beyond the disc?

Do I remove the pad material that sits beyond the disc (approx 3 or 4 mm)?

Do I find the right pads? Well, I mean, I thought I had the right pads but perhaps someone has a part number or MAYBE even a scrap pad that could be posted to me to try for size and compare etc.

Thanks for any help!

Sam

p.s. Sorry for the lack of restoration updates, still waiting for my 4.6 engine to come back from the builders, ECU mounted on battery box cover, Fusebox behind passenger seat etc etc ... getting there but real life gets in the way!

Pad should not be larger than disk? Must be wrong pads?

Thanks for the response, Do you have this setup? If you do, do you have any details of the pads you've used? I am hoping someone will pipe up and say, yeah that happens to everyone that uses X pads, you need Y' ...

Sam

Mondeo V6s came with a variety of different calipers, so you may have the wrong pads.

Sounds like the wrong size pads.

My 888/887 callipers were lifted straight from a 4x4 Sierra Cosworth complete with Redstuff pads, which fit the 283mm disks perfectly.

I don't think the pad number is visable whilst fitted to the car, otherwise I'd get part number for you.

...edited to add that I've just re-read and noticed that you have the 278mm disks. Sounds like you have the right pads for the 283mm set-up. Wrong disks wink

The pads I used when I did this upgrade were 278mm from a Granada Cossy. They should fit the 887/888 calipers perfectly with no need to file anything. The only mod I had to do was widen the holes on the mount to take the larger bolts for the carrier and shim the carrier out with a couple of washers.

Daz. The 887 and 888 are for left and right front. I can't remember which is which though.

Same here - 888 and 887 calipers from an Escort Cossie with 283mm RWD Sierra Cossie front discs and shaved caliper carriers. You will have to relieve the caliper carriers to fit the 283mm discs as the std 888/887 setup was used with a 278mm disc.

If you're using 278mm discs then you must have spaced the calipers off the hub quite a bit as well (unless they are turned down 283mm diameter discs) as the offset for the 278mm disc is different to the 283mm disc.

Use a 283mm disc and you will then only need a 1mm washer between the caliper carier and the hub to centralise the carrier over the disc.

Hope thats not too confusing.

Good luck

Cheers

Thanks all,

Well, as Marty guessed, the discs are turned-down 283s. The reason is that they ran incredibly close to the caliper carrier (worringly close I felt) and having heard that there was a 278mm disc as well I thought "damn, should have got 278mm" and did the deed.

Strangely though the inside pads definitely sit higher than the outside ones, so I'm not sure that even with the full disc diameter I wouldn't have a problem. As I said, the pads did not sit in the carriers on the insides, they did on the outsides though ... hence the filing.

Well, I will investigate further but if anyone is removing an old pad from their 887/888 equipped chim I'd love the opportunity to try it for size.

Equally, anyone with this setup near GL17?

Cheers,
Sam

Hallo

I have put together quite a few brakeupgrades ( more the 20) using the 888/887 calipers or the 27/28 caliper. The only difference is the mounting hole. In some cases (IIRC) with the 27/28 caliper you will have to redrill the bub to 12 mm.
I always used 278 mm disc because the caliper is designed for that size disc.
The 283 mm disc IMHO is too wide and can hit the carrier. So when I used the 283 mm disc I milled them down to 278 mm for perfect fitment. The pad won't sweep the extra piece of disc anyway because the pad doesn't come that far. On the majority of kits I used the 278 mm disc from a Granada Cosworth or Mondeo V6(1993-2000)and I used a 11 mm spacer to centralise the caliper over the disc.In all my kits sold fitment was never a problem and no filling needed. The same with the pads. There should not be any overhang.Any questions just mail me.

The 283mm disc will hit the caliper carrier as you say. However all I did was to file off 3mm from each side of the caliper carrier and then the 283mm discs will fit. It saves having to turn discs down and the other advantage is that you can then use the same spec pads that the Escort Cosworth used.

Thanks, I have sent an email. Good to know that I should still be able to use the discs.

Good point, I have options then!

Umm ... durrr ... think I've just solved it.

I bought my EBC red stuff on ebay (item no. 250214439689, part number DP3955C) but having just had a good look at www.buypartsby.co.uk I can see that I've got pads for a '98-on car, the ones I should have are DP3956C for a '94-on ... you can even see from the diagrams that the earlier pads position the friction material a few mm inboard.

Oooops, thanks for the pointers everyone, I got there in the end.

I will put my 98-on pads on ebay (detailing the light filing of course, they're still usable) to recoup what I can and but hte proper pads now.

Lesson learnt!

Thanks again
Sam

hansdaal.I have one of your front kits which came with the pads etc.I have now put my own kit together on the rears..bit of a job because the hubs have to be changed. Can you give me some part numbers for the pads on the front and rear so i can cross reference them to get some higher spec pads for (fast road track) because im planning to do some track days next year .Think my front discs are 278mm because of the larger spacers...Which pads are the best for road use and the odd track day,i don`t want a long warm up period like those green stuff rubbish and no sqealing..

Daz, Have found just the cossie front upgrade perfectly good enough for trackdays using std pads on rear and Mintex 1144's on the front. As and when you really start hammering the car to the limit on track then the brakes will no doubt fade. Keep your sessions down to 15-20 mins and all should be fine. Dont forget to warm the car up for a few laps and cool it down for a lap!

so your saying keep the rears with standard pads and just upgrade the fronts. The rears are just standard decent quality road pads ..Cheers.

I have an 887/888 + 278mm brake kit on my S3 from Hans and all work and fit fine, I am however looking at upgrading the pads that came with the kit to Mintex 1144s, upon cross referencing the part number of the pads it shows as being for a granada cosworth (no surprises there)the pads for an escort cosworth are the same apart from being less than a mm taller so i would think will fit nerd all this info by the way is from the mintex website smile

cheers.....Tony..
