Looking for advice on exhaust sound.
My latest Chim has a sleeved exhaust.
This may come as a shock to some but have to say I am not totally sold on the sound. Yes it's great when at higher revs but at low engine speeds it sounds too much like a tractor/outboard motor.
What I am really after is a much smoother deep rumble.
Is this possible?
Any recommendations other than changing to an Aston (i.e. keeping the Chim)?
Many thanks.

It's very subjective, but I like the sound of mine.

Precats out, standard Y piece with cat, and ACT cherry bomb exhaust.

Jim, your profile says "midlands".
I am in "midlands" too - close to Newark.
My 500 has no precats, no main cat, Clive Y piece, standard exhaust. 105 decibels or thereabouts.
To my ears it sounds purposeful but nice, and I am 60, so not of the Max Power generation.
If you want to come and listen, just email me.

I've just ordered one of these from ACT, gotta wait 2 weeks while they make it, cant wait to get it fitted http://www.dazee.net/tempfiles/ACT_exhaust.mp4

I ran with the pre cats out and a Clive F Y piece with the standard exhaust and thought the sound was ok, I then changed the exhaust for the ACT Cherry Bomb and the difference is very noticeable, louder, yes but the tone is very different, more bass without the agricultural sound.
Looks fantastic too, just a shame you can't see it under normal use

My 400 is the same, no pre-cats, no main cat and a Clive F with std silencer. very sweet but without the tractor noise at tickover.
Not arguing with the guy who switched to a Cherry bomb set up. Noise quality and volume is a personal thing. But I would just draw your attention to one thing - if you have plans to do track days, my car is right on the limit for the louder tracks (105dBA), I have to add track silencers for evenings or places like Bedford (101-102 dBA) and I cannot take part at the quieter tracks.
As to MOTs, mine passed last time, I didn't ask how, but I do have the old main cat Y piece in case I have problems. If, like me, you would get your TVR place to organize or even do your MOT, they can always refit the old Y if needed.
Come over and have a listen to mine and compare with yours - it's the only way you will know. I am in all weekend, 07736 774325. Nice driving weather!

Has anyone had the exhaust modification offered by Central recently? The bit that says "sounds great and not to loud" keeps drawing me to give this ago.
Anyone in the Midlands area i could have a would be an appreciated bonus.

I'm pretty sure the Central mod is opening up the silencer and sleeving or part sleeving the two pipes.
Might be wrong though!
My 4.6 sounds perfect to my ears with
Pre cats removed
Main cat in Y piece
And standard silencer?
It's what I call subtle, some might say it's quiet but I think it's sweet and still really loud around town,
Now I reckon a 4.0 litre engine sounds really good with standard Y but sleeved pipes, they seem to burble really good and not to high on the decibels.
De cat Y is for hard core deaf people, or track folk, Clives Y is very nice but I've little experience of them.
For mainly road use I find with standard ecu the Catted Y piece gives some back pressure, more torque so picks up quicker from low to mid revs, feels faster than a de cat Y?
Err soon as the de cat car hits 4000+ revs it's a different kettle of fish and mine was much faster up the top of the rev range.
Good for track days!
Back to the sound, didn't Tvr employ some music/ acoustics guru to max the quality of sounds available at different revs, probably sales Bull, but I think the original cat cars with pre cats removed is close to perfect taking into account early morning start ups around your neighbours etc. I loved the de cat Y on full throttle pure roar but most everywhere else I felt slightly embarrassed and it ruined my Tvr experience. Just my pennies worth lads and each to their own.

ACT Exhausts used to be one piece, however, have changed to 3 pieces a couple of years ago to help with shipping

I've since changed the U clamps for round clamps, similar to the down pipe clamp.

They offer excellent service and even split into more pieces for shipping to far off corners of the planet.ACT Exhausts used to be one piece, however, have changed to 3 pieces a couple of years ago to help with shipping

I would ether pick it up my self or pay the extra for delivery ,there are loads of cheap companies now . I don`t like an exhaust in bits .
Well, I am sure Dazee would love to pop over from Japan to save a tenner.....[/quote

Andav, why did you change to round clamps, clearance or sealing issues ? and where did you get them from ?
Ground clearance was the main reason, they never actually caught, but they were like hooks hanging down, yes I could have turned them but I also preferred the cleaner look and also in stainless steel.I got them from a seller on eBay, they are 51-55mm in size
