efinitely Derek eek no other signs of burning either looking at the fire rings & general gasket condition so just looks localized to the weakest area of that part of the gasket (between fixings) scratchchin make sure the escaping gases have not eroded/deformed the block or head carefully thumbup a nitrous induced failure I presume scratchchin

after cleaning away the scorch marks i can barely feel anything with my nail. Guess i dodged a bullet this time.
Yes a nitrous mistake. I have a 3rd nitrous solenoid with a very small jet that is operated by the left red button on the steering wheel. This is to weaken the mix as it goes rich off the scale on the wideband when i am full tilt in 3rd gear. Works a treat. BUT... i didnt use stage 1 (the full throttle system) and hit the left button with stage 2 (the right button). So it may have gone a weak towards for a moment!

Perry Stephenson swears by the Elrings but also uses copper gasket sealant with them. He has run huge amounts of nitrous and now runs a 4.6 with an old school blower and nitrous to run mid 9's in his MGB.
