Wooden Steering Wheel ?
Discussion
I've seen a couple of Chims with wooden steering wheels, which look absolutely gorgeous.
Do you have one? Where did you get it from? and do you have regrets?
My concern is that the highly polished and varnished wood might be too slipply, and with my "enthusiastic" driving style, it's not a good idea to lose grip on the wheel!
Many thanks
David

Hi David

I've got a wooden one:

Is this what your talking about?
Its not slippy - even if wet and matches the dash.
It came with my car but I'm sure a net search would turn one up or another PH'er will tell you where to get one.
Cheers
Ian
Hi Ian
Didn't realise that it was you. Thanks for the pics, it does look lovely.
I've done a google without much success, so i'll call a couple of the dealers. May be Offords might have one - i'm going in there for the Cherry Bomb exhaust conversion on Wednesday, same principle as yours, but with the cherry bomb pipes being used to replace the perforated originals.
More baritone, but not too loud is what i'm expecting ( i know, a little poofish, but i have old ears
)
Bruntingthorpe track day tomorrow
cheers, David

That steering wheel is a Momo Fighter and I've got the same one on my Griff.
Here's a couple of pictures. The last one is how it looks now.
You will need a Boss kit for the Momo Fighter. Search the Griffith forum and you will find details of this because its been discussed recently.

Many thanks Ian, have been doing some searches (forgot to include Griff forum doh!)
Was the original difficult to remove, and did you try to refit the TVR horn push. I gather that the Momo wheel has a different sized gap for this?
cheers
David

Call clivef on the griff forum he probably still has the link to the site.
The original wheel was easy to remove, just undo the screws.
The Boss change was a complete B
d and I ended up taking a 3 legged puller to the wheel, bending it in the process. I have the patience of a saint but this really, really tested me. Don't underestimate this job.
The TVR horn won't fit the Fighter wheel if you keep the raised plate which sits over the horn button - you'll have to use the MOMO version. But if you don't use that, you can make the original TVR horn button work.
You can make it fit very neatly by lightly trimming the plastic fins on the back of the button. One other thing is the TVR button earths by using a V shaped pin on the back which presses against the Boss (or wheel, I can't remember). This no longer fits with the Momo Boss/Wheel.
I got around this by making up a small cable with a female space connector on one end and bare wire on the other.
Pull one end of the V earth pin out of the hole it sits in (it's obvious when you have it in your hand) and stick the end into one side of the female spade - it fits nicely - then twist the bared wire end onto the back of one of the steering wheel securing screws. It sounds far more complicated than it is
As for your concerns about the varnish being slippy.... It's better than the leather Personal wheel in my opinion, and I have no problems with 'grippy' gloves in the winter when I drive with the roof off!

Call this guy, here's the email I got from him in April 2005. I just told him I had a '92 Griff and a Fighter and he told me what Boss I needed.
"We do have the correct Boss for your car the price is £43.50 including post.
If you would like to order call Jack on 0208 882 2206 or email Info@autopowerltd.co.uk"
I got the Fighter off ebay. They come up now and again and I know of another Griff with a standard Fighter wheel which still looks great.
I polished the centre of mine because the ebay seller said it was perfect but it was scratched to hell. I tried spraying it which looked good for a while but chipped. Whilst stripping it to paint it again I got to bare metal and thought what the hell, I'll give it a go. It took hours using a dremmel though.
The picture doesn't do it much justice.

Mines a Personal wheel, full wood rather than with the leather grips -
IMHO it looks nicer but does get a bit clammy when your hands are hot.
It doesn't get slippy or anything, quite the opposite in fact, just a little sticky when your hands are sweaty.

Hi Zippee, it was your car i remember seeing - i was at the start of the Furball, lurking on the bank looking at the cars. The wheel loooks lovely, did you source the wheel yourself, or was it already on the car?
cheers, David

Zippee's is the same as mine:

It's a rare factory fit option (I believe).
