is it standard practice to "stick" headlamps in with silicone,on a chimaera? mine seem to be.!

Yep, if you don't they'll fall out!

The lens is stuck in place and can be replaced (i.e. the headlamps are not exactly sealed units).

Er, Elises are glued together. Does that make them poor build quality? OK, not quite the same thing, but if Sikaflex is the most prudent solution to the problem then why not? I don't recall any stories of headlamps falling out.
