with the Chimaera's 10 year birthday this year, who has the earliest example on PH. Any one know how to decipher the lost book code to find a date/production number or would that just be too easy!

The easiest way is looking at your log book and seeing what exact date the car was first registered.

Doesn't tell you when the car was actually made though....

The last 4 digits of the Vin/chassis number seem to be marked on a lot of components to identify the car in production. Are these sequential in order of build ?

Mine was 1214.

Nah Dave wouldn't have been as old as that - still in chariots then.

Yes and no.... Yes they do use the chassis number as a tracer but the number is sequential for the number of TVRs that they made. 214 would refer to the 214th TVR to be made that year not the 214th Chimaera. The chassis ordering can also get out of step with registration number so you can have a later chassis number car registered before an earlier one...

Hi Steve
do you know how to decipher the SDLDCC4PX etc etc number? may car was registered in May 1993 so I recon it's a pretty early one. Is there such a thing as a Chimaera register with the chassis numbers logged?

Chassis number should be the nearest guide IMHO. Certainly not reg date (we've been here before on this haven't we?).

So, any earlier than 1214 then? Mine is 11276 so quite new really (April 94).

First 3 letters are for TVR
D = drophead
Next 2 characters are type - ie CC Convertable Chariot
Next number is model - ie 4 = 400
P = petrol
Next number is random security number
Next letter is the build year (A=1980 B = 1981 and so on - i is not used) - build years started in September for the October Motorshow apparently - so you can have a 1990 registered car on a 1991 build year.
Next letter is the build month (A=Jan B=Feb and so on - i is not used)
Next 3 numbers are believed to be standard/random of no significance..
Final 3 numbers shows the car number - ie 14th car built from the 1991 build year.

According to www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=3682

If this is correct mine is the 214th car in 1994 (produced in February 1994 AD - J4J)

At the time I got this information from the TVR CC registrar - Mervyn Lerner? - and has been confirmed as correct - should think it didn't change much for the Chims..

Hmmm. Mine starts SDL D CC 3 P 1 R A xxx xxx so does this mean it's a 3 litre Chim? Or does the 3 signify 4.3? The R A seems correct for a April 1994 code.

My 4.3 also has didgit 3, so there seems to be some consistency. I am March 93 #338 it would seem.

I'm not sure this is 100% correct, I'm SDL B A0 3 R... for a '99 Chim 450.
