I seem to have broken my rear axle over the weekend. I’ve just rang an independent dealer to get a price of a rear axle and have been told the axle is the diff. stupid question i know but is it the same unit or two separate units.
any help would be great.

You have a diff not an axle.
Depending on the age of the car it will either have a GKN or a BTR, easily to tell once you have seen pics of either.
Broken in what way? no drive? noise?

If you get drive then its possibly a CV joint. Maybe even a broken bush/mount on the diff.
