OK, strange question but does anyone know how loud a standard 400 Chim is with the cats still in place?

My car is due for its NCT (=MOT) in Ireland and they have just introduced a new 'excessive exhaust noise' fail point. Basically, the car exhaust needs to be less than 99db(A).

Thanks

Big Al.

Martyn,i think you will find its 98 decibels.the other thing you need to watch is the new regulation that a car must have the speed rated tyres the manufacturer specced for it.i know a lot of people are running V rated tyres as the original sizes are no longer available in Z rated, this will be a failure when the new regulations come into affect...

I checked with the insurance company regarding the tyres , they said its not a problem because we can only travel at 70mph by law ..

I also checked with my insurers on this (because of lack of choice if I want same brand front and rear)and they said NO, do not de-rate tyres but were ok with me changeing wheel size.

Just checked the test criteria when my standard 400 was measured at 96db.

Noise meter 0.5m away from exhaust at 45 degrees. Engine at 4500 rpm.
Although I don't remember taking it up to that level of revs, seems a bit high.

It is fair to say that amongst TVRs mine is not the loudest, however it may be well be one of the quietest Chimaeras on the road. On tunnel runs I have not been able to hear my car over and above the vehicles around me.

I would be interested to hear what the results are after the Irish MOT test.

Arse, mine registered a high of 120 at 4000.

I'll be taking mine back to the TVR dealers in that case as they surely know a friendly MOT station.

Pretty sure there's no 'limit' as such for MOT in uk - you should be fine. They're more concerned about the st it spits out.

Noise is solely at discretion of tester here isn't it?

yeah, it's a new thing here - being introduced 1st april (if only it were a joke ;-)

don't get me started on the road tax €1600 pa for a 4 litre Chim.

still, it's worth it once the sun comes out and the engine fires up biggrin
