Jaguar XF - Was it that good in hindsight?

Sat nav/Tech was well behind although the B&O stereo was a lovely thing - almost up to the sound of the engine!
Yeah the rising gear knob got on my nerves after a while too along with the revolving vents. The sat nav was terrible took me on loads of goose chases.Edited by Stuart70 on Thursday 4th June 17:58
Ahh I think you mean B&W stereo. Mr Wilkins will be mighty upset to be replaced by a swede

Edited for my fading, failing memory - you are, of course, correct. The sound was still excellent as Mr Wilkins designed.Ahh I think you mean B&W stereo. Mr Wilkins will be mighty upset to be replaced by a swede

I dislike novelty theatrics and those would definitely grate with me too. Is there a dealer option somewhere in the software to turn both off?
I'm pretty sure you can turn the vents off through the touch-screen settings.Nothing you can do about the gear selector - I think that's a standard feature of that type of selector for the ZF box?

I've got a 2010 XKR, so that comes with the same gear knob. I can't say I ever notice it. By the time I want to use it, its there. It works much better than the MB lever on the steering column which you poke up or down to make some sort of electrical connection which then asks the gearbox it is would mind changing and the gearbox then decides whether it will do as you've asked, or perhaps not.

I had an S-class immediately before my current XF Sportbrake, and I'd certainly agree with that. The adaptive cruise control on the Jaguar is not a patch on the Mercedes' though, and the Mercedes 'Comand' system was vastly superior to the Jaguar's touch screen, which is hateful.

...The system does far more than the MB system, so perhaps they're not that comparable. Her Merc's electronics are divided into some things work on the central display and are driven by the knob and buttons between the seats while other functions are driven from the dashboard display and and driven by buttons on the steering wheel and at least to my mind there's no clear reason why some things are in one place or the other or why some things are randomly split between the two.
The E-class must be different to the S-class, then.On the S-class everything (and that's a vastly more comprehensive range of functions than any XF owner could ever dream of) is controlled via the rotary shuttle on the centre console. I found it a very relaxing and intuitive system to use - much better than - as you say - trying to hit the right spot on a tiny touch screen as your fat finger gets bounced around by the motion of the car.

Any knowledge of the early 410bhp XF SV8, I've an itch I'd like to scratch, as V8s are disappearing fast and I'd like a bit more comfort on my regular 280 mile round trips.
It's probably the 2nd most reliable version they ever made, after the Duratec 3.0 V6. By 2008 that 4.2 is totally sorted, with only a few age related issues relating to the cooling system to worry about. The ZF6 is a well known box and remanufactured units can be sourced for £2k - £3k fitted, although it'll do 150k even if it never has the oil changed. The 5.0 XFR is very very fast but the 4.2 is no slouch, and you don't have any worries about the timing gear or direct injection problems as the car ages. The thinking man's XF
I spent some time looking for one over the last couple of months, and you do get nice privately owned and well looked after cars turning up. Look at X350 XJRs as well, you get a better riding, lighter car for the same sort of money.

IMHO even better is the 5.0 V8 N/A XF Portfolio. 400 BHP, less stressed engine, loads of performance and great at wafting, fully loaded etc.. Had one for 2 1/2 years and regret that I do not still own it. R.

Coming for a bump as it truly is hindsight now:- I notice the XF & XE Have both been pulled from the Jaguar configuration website all together now, same as the F Type, with just an option to search for current stock.
I wonder if we'll ever see another true car from Jaguar?
I know they were an older model now, but a few weeks ago what looked like a fairly decent spec xf was starting at around £34k brand new. That was some bargain compared to anything else at that price. It was cheaper than a mid spec civic! I wonder if we'll ever see another true car from Jaguar?
I think the latest update massively improved the interior and they are probably going to be a tempting used buy now. But I can’t get past the horror stories on reliability.
Edited to add - there are a couple still on AT for £36.6k don’t look poverty spec either.

It feels like the facelift-facelift with the Pivi Pro infotainment had only been out for a few minutes!I think the latest update massively improved the interior and they are probably going to be a tempting used buy now. But I can’t get past the horror stories on reliability.
Definitely a huge amount of car for the money; Especially the later models like the one linked - They've had quite a few years in production now so the bigger issues have been sorted, all quite acceptable offerings IMO - Even if I would still avoid the diesel.
Even my now "old" 2018 Sportbrake version attracts comments about feeling nice / quiet inside - I know there's better out there if you look around, but I doubt you'd do as well pound for pound in terms of value.
