I was covering north wales so I got better figures on the A55 at night than I did being stuck in Manchester and Liverpool. Felt rough all week with a cold so it was lovely to drive as so comfy and smooth. It surprised me how nimble it feels for a big car, I thought it would be quicker but that'll be the weight and autobox

It probably does need a service as I think my dad has only done about 500 miles a year in it the last 2/3 years and I will get one done soon and look into something to release a bit of the V8 noise as they're so quiet but then the quietness can also be part of its charm. I'll think on that one

When I saw the tax amount that put me right off I have three cars that cost me about £75 a month

Lovely motor albeit not for me long term although as I'm getting a bit older the thought of a comfy quieter auto with a big engine is starting to become an option.

ETA - if he's poorly enough to get DLA or whatever it's called these days he might qualify for free RFL, or free RFL on a car used by someone else exclusively for his benefit. Keep it on to fetch his shopping and drive him around in if it keeps the old boy happy maybe?

Unfortunately he's reliant on oxygen as its lung cancer and he's 78. I've said I'll take him anywhere to visit like nostalgia runs or anything from his younger days but reality is its hard work for him and there isn't that much in the tanks he has to take out.
I've just put the Jag back on his drive as I feel bad taking it from him for now as its his pride and joy

Nice idea. How about getting it serviced then SORNed for a bit it to save the VED and running costs, but you can both still enjoy having it?

Regarding the auction ending price....

There is a 10 plate XKR Convertible with the same drab colours and 55k on the clock at BCA at the moment, it has failed to get any bids at a £12,900 reserve despite three trips round the block, I'm busting to see where it finally lands. Grade 2 car too, so great condition.

If that was a real bid for his coupe, not a shill, he was an absolute clown if he didn't take it, it's absolutely a £13k - £14k private sale car on a good day.

I owned a 14 plate X150 Coupe for four and a half years. I never had any problems but I never gelled with it, finding it very cumbersome. This was probably due to owing too many TVR's.
I'm driving an F Type R now which is a far more agile and comfortable ride. Make sure you a some good test drives and make sure it's the size of car for you.

More comfortable? Really?

My XKR rides perfectly well on 20's and I thought the F type was supposed to be noticeably firmer?

I’m impressed with how my XKR rides, it’s better than an XF on 20” wheels. Much firmer in dynamic mode though!

This is interesting. I am coming from a TVR and looking for an XKR convertible. I have driven a couple and they are great cars but I just don't get out of them with any sort of buzz. I want a car that my wife and I can take on road trip across mainland Europe and the XKR seems to fit the bill perfectly, I have looked at the F Type and keep being put off by the lack of interior luggage space. Perhaps the rawness of the TVR will just have to live in the past.

Everyone's impression will differ obviously but my wife had a 14-plate XF S Estate for a couple of years, during which time I had my 5.0 XKR. The XF was definitely a more cosseting ride, but the estate models do have air suspension on the rear - may be different feeling to the saloon.

You can have fun with an XK/XKR, providing the suspension is in good nick and you have decent tyres it can be hustled along. It does reward a smoother hand more than a scruffing though and where it perhaps falls down is feedback - it isn't so apparent that you're taking too many liberties until it's almost too late. It's not a TVR and won't respond well to being driven in the same way.

@threespins - I drove a V6S a while back and it really didn't feel much different to my 5.0 XKR, certainly didn't strike me as more dynamic nor more comfortable, but as above that's just my impression. Perhaps the R got some suspension upgrades? I also didn't (immediately) take to the mechanical LSD, I found the eDiff in the XKR and the V8 F-Types to be more progressive and forgiving.

Well 3 months into ownership and I have my first "problem" with the car.

The washer bottle/pipe has a very small weeping drip from it. So will be a cheap fix. The bigger problem is that to get at it the front wheel and inner wheel arch cover need to be removed, so will take some time and fiddling. I think it will be a spring job when the weather is warmer don't fancy being under the car in the cold.

It's not hard to get at the bottle at all, once you have the wheel in the air remove it then you have I think 8 or ten Torx screws to get out to remove the rear half of the arch liner, then you're there. My last XKR had non-functional screen washers which was due to gunk accumulating on the filter for the screenwash pump, was five minutes work to get at it then another ten to syphon the tank out and remove it.

Saying that I did it on a nice, warm autumn afternoon, not near-freezing temps in December so YMMV, as they say...

After searching for 6 months finally found this gem. Only 14k miles from new 2013 with a FSH. All good so far!

That 5.0 litre looks exceptional . I am desperate to know what you paid for her and I say this with the utmost respect . The car appears in tip top condition with a comparatively unusual wheel combination and in not the most common of colours . Its not the most desirable Model as many would inevitably go for the XKR . Some will remember that we recently had an XKR on the Pistonheads Auction Site that failed to reach its reserve and remained unsold . Naturally I don't expect you to reveal the purchase price but in my estimation this is easily a £20k possibly slightly more Car . I say this hopefully to invite some comment ? Did you buy it Privately or through a Dealer ? I am hoping you say the Former rather than the Latter

That looks superb. You say it has FSH. Do yourself a favour and check the history to see if the coolant Y-Pipe has been done. It’ll be easier without a supercharger in the way, but that era had pipes that fail with age. Also worth checking the water pump too.

A smidge over £20k but I specifically wanted Racing red with 19" wheels and less than 20k mileage!
Bought privately!

Brilliant. Thanks for that. I'll get in touch with the guys that did the last service in October.

Gorgeous car, exceptional combination. Besides my 2010 XKR, I still have my Carnival Red 2002 XKR, which looks very beautiful but in comparison to the X150 is completely inferior in every way. May you enjoy your new XK, and may you get as many years and miles of pleasurable driving as I have gotten. I'm beginning my 11th year of ownership and have 210,000 miles, is still my daily driver and still wonderful. Hope you'll have the same.

It doesn't have a Supercharger , its a normally aspirated 5.0 . Keep up at the back there biglaughbiglaugh

I suspect that's why he said 'It’ll be easier without a supercharger in the way'.
