I think he realised that in 2006 the top selling vehicle in the USA was the Ford F-series truck, and the next best selling trucks are the Chevy Silverados, the Chevys alone selling more than all the other Japanese truck manufacturers put together.

It's terrible when the facts get in the way of a rant, isn't it?

I was hoping you would come along with solid facts. Trooper 2 and I were running out of emotive symbols!

I know it's straying very off topic, but when Ford put the light-duty V8 diesel in F-series we could see just how aggressive Toyota is about the US truck market. If Toyota want to design a new diesel engine to match Ford's offering, then with the production volumes of the Toyota Tundra at only ~200000 they will probably lose money on each one! Of course Toyota could buy the 4.5 V6 engine in from International. hurl

It's too late for a Toyota program at ITEC though Nissan use their engines around '09.

Sorry, weekend away!

The Jap products are far superior to anything offered by the big three in terms of quality, they are a better product and are being marketed quite aggressively.

Well they aren't killing them in sales, the Ford F-series has been the number one selling vehicle here for 20 plus years and the Japanese trucks have a very long way to go. There are still a lot of rural folks (rednecks if you like) that will not buy it if it isn't U.S. made.

just don't tell them that alot of the engines, etc for Ford and Dodge trucks say Hencho en Mexico...

Who knows where anything is built. Most Toyotas and many Mercs are built in the U.S. Some Merc bits are done in Mexico.....go figure.

Dashboards? Have you been in a 2004 or newer F-150? A Lariat (top) range model? I would wager not, as there aren't many in the UK:

The Ford diesel engines are made in Indianapolis, IN and Huntsville, AL; their gas engines in Romeo, MI and Windsor, ON.

For the trucks I'm not convinced they are better in terms of reliability or ability to haul stuff. They are not 'better' in the minds of people who vote with their chequebooks every day of the week.

Most Brits will slate any French or American car and will laugh out loud at the prospect of buying a British one (not that you can anymore). People who do are either eccentric or over 60. Anyone that buys a German car is admired for buying a quality car. To purchase a Japanese car means you have gone for the reliable and sensible option.

We are a dispicable self loathing people.

laugh I have a British car! laugh

On a serious note, as you have pointed out, we (Yanks & Brits) seem to be on a tiresome road of self hate & blame. When will it end? Perhaps when we have done ourselves totally in and are able to start blaming our new masters??
