In the Bracknell office today for a performance review, lots of praise... good job pat pat. So a good day, coming down the A322 from Bracknell towards the A30/M3 bl00dy road works so we're all queuing. Just as we get to the cones, I let someone across into my lane & a Polish lorry driver decides he can go as well & thumps the back of the Jag
I pull over, a little way on having got his number, he speaks not a word of English, German & Polish yes. I ask for insurance he's not having any of it. So 999 & after 20 minutes a very nice Traf plod from Surrey comes out in & he tries to get details. 40 minutes later after he has struggled we have a form filled out!
Mr. Pole reckons he was in the right & couldn't see me, for fecks sake he's hit the NSR wheel arch & bumper on the Jag with the front 3ft of his truck, is he blind.

Sorry to share this but had to have a rant, real pain is I've had it 6 weeks or so, the garages prep was poor so they had it back in & made a cracking job of the dings & chips, now it's molested

The answer is take the damned trucks off the roads and put them back on the railways where they belong. This will not start to happen until you pester your MP so I urge you to get rid of your anger and frustration by doing this.

A train is very unlikely to hit your car up the jacksie and if it does its unlikely you would be around to worry about it.

What a brilliant idea, all the goods for shops, supermarkets, and every retail outlet in the country can be stored at railway stations. Hold on a minute i have just thought of a flaw in this well thought out plan. How do we get the goods from the staition to the shops. Now thats a tricky one.

I had a similar experience on th M6 near Walsall a couple of years ago, lanes 1 and 2 were closed for roadworks and as we were filtering into lane 3 a spanish lorry hit the nearside rear quarter of my XJR, I have no tolerance for lorry drivers at the best of times, they are without doubt the worst drivers on the road, I drive 20000-25000 miles a year most of it motorway and 90% of all holdups, incidents and accidents are caused by HGV's, I work with them, I employ them for my business but on the road they are a menace, arrogance personified driving 42 tonnes of vehicle, and driving it badly most of the time, so to get hit by a spannish one really topped it off.

I had a battle with my insurance company to reclaim my excess, but 6 months later I got it.

Trains are not the answer, it works in the US or Canada but the UK is to small, better training and an enforcement by the police on commercial vehicles breakingthe law instead of the general motorist. I use HGV's in my line of work but some restriction on hours for being on the road would ease congestion without massive inconvinience to the haulage industry, I don't mean hours driven I mean hours allowed on the road between 7am and 9am and between 4pm and 6pm no HGV's allowed to operate on the public highway. And all foreign drivers must take a UK HGV test and be able to communicate in English. Ok I'm getting a bit carried away now but I'm about to do battle with them for the next 2 hours driving home, but if I was prime minister

I knew I wouldn't be the only one. Quick update, I found out who did Guy Salmon Maidstones
remedial work when I bought it. Got him to do a quote £455+VAT, my excess is £200 so I paid for it myself. Colin did a brilliant job, quite quickly, picked up Tues AM, delivered back Thurs PM!

What I am saying is do the main distribution by rail, then you only have smaller scale local distribution to worry about. It worked before it will work now.

Most manufacturing, stocking of retail shops, Etc, now use what is called "just in time" shipping methods this lets them have smaller warehouses, less money tied up for long periods in inventory and more manufacturing and retail space. Rail is not flexible enough to meet the demands of this system.
