2005 X-Type 2.0d: noisy injectors
Discussion
In May 2009 I bought a high mileage (93,800) 2005 X-Type 2.0d. The engine has always 'clattered' a bit (diesel knock) and I was told by a franchised dealer and an inependent dealer (twice) that it was down to noisy injectors.
Just over a year and 34,000 miles later a common problem occurred. The hose to/from the EGR valve split and suddenly the turbo could be heard. This was accompanied by a lot of black smoke under acceleration and an engine management fault which left the engine working but without the turbo. Ignition off/on cleared the fault.
£60.22 later and I'd replaced the hose - it splits near the top and is a common problem, especially on higher mileage cars. What a difference! The throttle response is now noticeably sharper, computer indicated fuel consumption is 2MPG better but most importantly the injectors are silent: the diesel knock has gone!
So if anyone else out there has 'noisy injectors', check this hose (visible under the engine cover, near the oil dipstick). I'm now thinking it was holed at 94,000 miles when I bought it.
