No PHers, not a request for the correct SI unit to describe the difference between Jaguars and other vehicles (or, even, between different Jaguars), but an attempt to trawl for some advice/knowledge/wit on a small but worrying noise from the diff unit on on my 1998 Daimler Super V8.

Car's done around 105k and there is a peculiar whining noise from the rear of the car (not the mother-in-law - I checked).

Manifests itself at m-way cruise when making small throttle adjustments (the whining noise, not the mother-in-law) - a slight whine for a few seconds and then all is quiet. Slightly different note when accelerating (gently) and decelerating - for some reason this made me think of heterodyning, and then diff unit wear. Am I mad?

Also noted a slight "clunk" from the driveline (somewhere) when changing from D to R in parking manoeuvres.

I suspect this may be the start of something expensive - though to be honest, I suspect buying the car was always going to be "the start of something expensive" eek
