I can concur that my S4 has 'tappety' sounds like the A6 and A7 videos above.

I thought this was because of the direct injection?

Could well be the FSI on these engines. VANOS made a tappety noise on BMW straight 6's, I assume it is the same on these as well. Either that or it is the camshaft moving about, opening and closing valves.
