Not sure on the Audis, but I imagine they're very like other VAG cars - so getting cruise retro fitted shouldn't be a big deal. Worth every penny IMO.
It's never really bothered me that much, though if it's fairly easy to do then I'll look into it! I mean, I've given myself a chilled glovebox purely because I can smile

Cruise is great. I've only used the chilled glovebox once and you can hardly fit anything in there so it's pretty pointless. Keeps my iPod nice and cold though rolleyes

I don't think I'd have a daily without cruise now... bit like most toys though.

These days I expect:
  • Climate control
  • Electric everything
  • Heated seats
  • Cruise control
  • 6CD changer + MP3 playback
  • Full leather
... etc etc

I do know what you mean. One of the reasons I went for the S4 (not just the engine smile) is that being the top A4 you could buy 5yrs ago it came with pretty much everything on it - so it's such a comfortable place to be on the daily commute.

Great post!
I have been dreaming about buying and S4 or even RS6 for some time - however my local garage told me parts for these cars can be horrifically expensive.. He quoted rear shocks and breaks on a 2003 RS6 will set you back around £3000.. Wowzers!

Has anyone experienced such bills with their S4?

That sounds like RS6 bill prices most defitinely and there are some eye watering possibilities with costs for them. On the S4 tho based on my research to buy and just 3k of mileage it seems much more reasonable

RS6's cost the earth to run, lots of big bills. First of which should be to replace all the suspension with after market units to rid it of DRC.

S4 is alot less scary. You might find it need a pair of aux radiators at some point, A good £500 or so, and maybe the brakes wont last as long as you hope discs and pads up front every 40k or so, but there not exotic £1000 discs like the RS6 so its not a big deal.

Hi all. Am I right in assuming the manual S4 has a shorter ratio 6th gear than the auto? What effect on MPG on a long run does this have?

3.9 final drive on the manual and 3.6 final drive on the auto.

This is what has such a huge effect when cruising.

Sat at 90mph the Manual is doing approx. 19mpg, the auto is doing around 27mpg, it is a massive difference.

You can always add the diff from the auto onto the manual, it would actually improve the car all round, a few US owners have done this and reported a transformation.
Audi put the 3.9 diff on to make sure the 0-60mph time was under half decent, it would have been over 6 seconds with the 3.6 diff, but would have been a much better all round car.

You could always fit LPG which a mate of mine has done on his.

He went for a high end kit for £2500 but travelling regularly from London to the north it has paid for itself in less than 18 months. His is a manual. No affect on performance or noise!

I'm thinking of (plaaning to) get this done.

Have you got any more details of who did the work and what the results are like?

I used to have an S4, averaged about 15mpg in town and 25mpg on a run. As for repair bills, had the engine replaced under warranty £10k, clutch replaced £2k, discs and pads all round replaced £600, tyres £350+ (depends on the offers at kwikfit). Throw in a service and it was the most expensive car I have ever run.

Having said all that it was the 2nd best car I have ever driven, its always funny for an estate car with a roof rack to win a motor bike off the line. As for the best car, its the 59 plate S3 that I picked up last month.

I read on rs246.com that having the S4 remapped improves economy as well as performance. Anyone seen it in real life?

(PS I imagine we only talking 1-2 mpg extra, not upto 40 biggrin)
