Today, I collect my Polo GTI
Discussion
The comparisons between Polo and Fabia are interesting.
I used to drive a Lexus RX and my wife a Fabia Estate. With both Lexus and Skoda the customer service we received was amazing. Considering one was a volume retailer and the other not there was little between them. I have never had a complaint with either. I know many on here slam Lexus but you have to hand it to them. They put their cars together very well and look after the customer even better. The ownership experience is completely painless (save the depreciation anyway).
With her having the kids for the majority of her motoring she "suggested" we swap. Being quite attached to my wedding vegetables I agreed.
The Skoda interior I just couldn't live with. Even as a junior partner within the VW family the quality of the plastics just isn't good enough. I would expect better, even at that price. I also felt I sat too high in the car. That said it did handle very well.
VW's customer service is, in my opinion, poor. The less time I spend at the dealer the better. It's why I bought through a broker as well - who was excellent.
Talking about build quality and customer service though Caterham must take the honour being the worst that I have experienced. They really couldn't give a flying monkeys elbow. I could put up with the poor service but get this. My three year old car (8,000 miles) has had:-
-Three radiators
-Two gearboxes and a further rebuild
-One replacement ARB
-One replacement Rev Counter - to rectify a miss reading fuel gauge
-A new Lambda Sensor
There are probably some other things that I have forgotten. Must be like childbirth; in the sense that you focus on the upside and try and blank out the pain.
I am hoping, and expecting, the Polo to be better!
Sorry if that has gone on a bit. Strictly is on in the background. I was at the point of losing my sanity before coming online.

I had seen a sort of concept on AE last November (I think) and since then I was hooked. Only having had the Suzuki for around 6 months I got fairly fed up of it. All the rattles, poor ride and poor quality really caught up with me and the novelty of having a half sporty first car wore off.
So, by September/October I was desperate for a new car. Working for Ford I had pondered a Focus ST but the insurance was around £7000. I then thought of a Clio 197 but having seen the 'suspected' Polo GTI and reading it would be in the UK by summer 2010 I was keen to get an order in. I told my dealer that I wanted the vehicle so as soon as they could, order one.
As everyone knows, VW lead times are not the best so I got really fed up waiting and was seriously close to buying an Clio RS 'Gordini'. I went off the idea on hearing the car had a build date (which came and went). I then thought of a Golf GTI but the news came my car was "in transit" and here we are.
So, a fair few ideas but I certainly don't regret the Polo in any way.
I'd say I am averaging 250-350 miles depending on how well work had gone that week.

Ive had the same discussion around fabia's v polo's. £3k difference is obviously a fair whack but as said the difference between the two is considerable.
At one point I owned a 97 polo and an 03 Fabia at the same time. The Polo despite its age difference was far superior inside. My parents at that time also had an 03 Polo too and again much the same, far better than the Fabia.
This time round I think looks come into it too. Personally I find the current Fabia very bland and couldnt see myself in it. However i do like the Polo.
Anyone compared the Polo to the ibiza or A1 yet? Again apparently the "same car" (chassis).

I don't think anyone on here has the Seat. For me it looks a bit too shouty. There was a comparison test done on AE website - the Polo came out on top...obviously! http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/videos/featuresvideos... did a group test recently if you can call it that
ive loved it since i saw pictures i did consider the fabia/seat purely as they were cheaper but the polo looks more stylish
autos are still new to me are do you knock it into neutral at lights or park ?
i never got a chance to use reverse(something i do quite alot) is engaging reverse slower can i block change from drive to reverse quickly ?

It depends on how long I am stopped for - anything up to, say, 15 seconds I use the foot brake. Any time longer I put it in park.
No, a quick getaway is not the easiest. I stop fully before putting it in opposite drive. A pain when doing manoeuvres!
I had a fairly terrible drive when the snow hit hard the first time round. From Hawick - Edinburgh - Fort William. Took me 2 hours from Hawick to Edinburgh which is normally a 45-60 minute drive depending on traffic. Then, from Edinburgh to Fort William it took me 10 hours!!!!
I thought the car would be a nightmare with DSG. I was constantly using the paddles to keep the gear as low as possible and had the ESP turned off for the majority of the drive. Getting up hills I was constantly turning the steering left-right-left to gain traction.
So, bearing in mind this was 3-5 inches of snow on the road, it will be like any other small hatchback only with the added problem of auto. It copes - just.
Have to say, that drive was good experience but I am st scared of driving in snow now.

Got my GTI too now. Picked it up on the 23rd December. Only done 300 or so miles in it. It's every bit as fast to 80 as my old Golf Edition 30. It absolutely spanks it along! Hope you're enjoying yours Peeves.
Now do I use a black PH smiley on the bodywork, or a white one on the rear window?
P.S. for those interested, mine is a company car and the lease price for the Fabia was almost exactly the same as the Polo. Therefore I can only assume that PCP prices would also be similar.
I had a look in a Fabia before I said I'd have the Polo. You can see where at least 2k of the 3k is saved. Obviously the usual things like the lack of sound deadening under the bonnet, the damped grab handles etc. You can see the colour of the body around the inside of the doors when they're closed. Also the Fabia has 25kg of ballast in the rear to balance the weight of the engine/gearbox combo. VW have moved the battery into the spare tyre well on the Polo to do the same job.
Oh, and one last thing. The Fabia has LED DRL's in the foglamp position so make you look like a right tt driving round with your fogs on all day. People on the Skoda forums are discussing how many people flash or wave at them in a day!

Good choice Sir. Exactly the same as mine - three door in white that is. Like you I'm loving the performance. Now do I use a black PH smiley on the bodywork, or a white one on the rear window?
